I might add, I was raised on the "shoulds" and the "they's".....
Let me explain, I heard constantly - you "should" do this or that. Or "they" say this or that.
I wanted to know who they are! And why should I do something?

It's funny, I don't remember being in trouble THAT much.
My parents didn't tell me many of those little white lies. It was more my older brother tormenting my younger brother and me. Stuff like "There's alligators down in the cellar."

Okay Ed - should we say my mother was more positive in her shoulds - Mary, you should go clean your room now. Wait, I was Mary Anne back then....he he I announced to the world on my 10th Birthday - I want to go by Mary from now on. Broke my mom's heart....Anyway, she never said the shouldn'ts but rather you should this or that. She still does it and she's 81, I'm 50! I'm carrying an AARP card now and my mom still dishes out the shoulds.......sigh!
On your alligitor threat - as a young child, I watched a scary movie about sketetons in closets. I didn't sleep well for years after that. My older brothers teasing me terribly. I don't know how many nights my parents had to walk in my room and open the closet door once again - see, no skeletons, now go to sleep! Why my dad didn't take the closet doors off is beyond me. He was a carpenter by trade. That's what I'd do if my kid was so scared. I positioned my bed towards the closet and would lie there, waiting for the door to open. My poor mom never had decent sleep until I was probably a teenager!

I was told once by my uncles friend to stab my plate and food before eating it, otherwise it would try to run away...I knew it wouldnt run away, never had, and never will, but I did it anyways for enjoyment...
