i didnt think about it until later, but during AF basic training in the 70s, you always got breaks if you smoked. (Smoke'em if ya got 'em...) Lots of folks started smoking so they could get the extra breaks. being a classic over-achiever, i used the extra time to read ahead....

but in retrospect, i wonder if the military didnt create it's own problems with that view on things.

Everyone smoked back then. I started in the 60's. Everyone I knew smoked and loved their breaks too.

I have to quit, the hubby's last cig was on 7/23/05 when he was rushed to the er and had a preforeated ulcer that resulted in a whole bunch of other probs and he was on a vent for 9 days. Now he's after me to quit, I don't smoke around him or in the apt, only outside, but I've cut back so much that now I can start to smell things that I never smelled before so I hope to be off of them by tomorrow (on my last pack now)
