Here are the direct death tolls for each storm...
Arlene -- 1
Bret -- 1
Cindy -- 1
Dennis -- 41
Emily -- 6
Jose -- 6
Katrina -- ~1,200
Ophelia -- 1
Rita -- 7
Stan -- 80
Wilma -- 22
Alpha -- 26
Gamma -- 37
Thanks for the info, and not to be nit-picky; but my sources have the official death toll from Katrina across all areas affected at over 1600 and still counting with over 1800 missing in Louisiana alone.
Looking at that other data, I can see where deaths played a significant role for Stan, and even Dennis... I dunno... where does one draw the line? I agree with your earlier post--they're retiring names rather capriciously. Granted 2005 was anything but your "typical" season, the point brought up that many "retired" names since 1990 probably shouldn't have been retired is valid. It's become almost like a competition--and these storms are anything but that to those most affected whether it be a Cat 1 or a Cat 5. If they're going to continue this, perhaps the WMO should set up firmer guidelines/standards that a storm must attain before it can be considered for retirement. Maybe they have; but based on the debates I've seen so far on this thread.... well I think caprice sums it up fairly well.

I could just imagine the American media having fun with these names. One of the purposes of the names is for it to be short and easily recognizable. The names as they stand now are a reasonable reflection of the diversity of the Caribbean area with a few Spanish/French names. I just don't buy that we should have a list of names that few people have ever heard of and that would be brutally butchered on every broadcast across the USA. Hell the media will probably have trouble saying "shawn or seen" to pronounced Sean.
I can only imagine what they would do with "Odanodan". All of this being said.. the 2011 list is rather white bread compared to most of them.

I really don't see the problem with Katia, other than I think it's much better spelt as Katya. I've known 2 Katya's in my life, and it's a very pretty name (pretty girls too
. Rina I'm not too sure about. It's just an ugly name imo. I'm not too fussed about it's similarity to Katrina and Rtia. you are always going to have similar soudning names come along eventually. At least it wasn't replaced with Rondel or Ru Paul or something

I just think that both Rina and Katia are tackless choices, afterall they are nearly identical to the names of the storms that got replaced in the first place.
As I said, its not the name thats the problem, its the timing.

Dr. Jonah Rainwater wrote:Some things confuse me here:
- Is Katia even a name?
- Isn't Rina just a shortened version of Katrina?
- Don uses a vowel sound you don't normally hear in hurricane names...(try and find another short O on that entire list)....why such an odd selection?
- And why would they retire Diane, Lili, KLAUS, among others...Iris and Keith weren't exactly cataclysmic either...but leave Emily?
Never knew anyone named Katia, but in HS I did know someone named Rena so I'd argue that R-I-N-A is just a different spelling. Still they could have picked better replacment names for both Katrina and Rita, in my opinion.

Don????? DON??????
This just in, Hurricane Don is a category 5 GIMMIE A FREAKIN BREAK! This ones a complete and utter joke.
Emily shouldn't still be there although I like the name for a Hurricane.
Katia, as is my most common Hurricane name complaint, it doesn't make a good HURRICANE name. Kelly works much better.
Rina, Although I like this one, sounds WAY too much like Rita, and they usually wont use a name that sounds alot like a retired name. Rachelle or Rachel would work better.
as for Sean, I'd of prefered they spell it Shaun personally but I have nothing to rag on here, better then Sebatian.
Whitney was my pick for W and is the best one here.
I grade overall the new names: D
They should get rid of Phelippe to give this list some kind of dignity

People, relax a little bit, take a big gulp of air. Remember we are naming tropical cyclones, not people, therefore names aren't that important even though I also believe the names kind of remind their predecesors. Nevertheless, the WMO found names that are short and relatively easy to pronounce. Therefore, I think they got an A+ since their objective isn't to find names that please the people but that are easy to pronounce by everyone!

What is the problem with Don? The short names are the best in my opinion, and there is nothing wrong with Don as a name. Maybe it isn't used that much over in the US, but here in the UK, it's a common name (and an awesome one imo;)). Also Katia sounds nothing like Katrina unless you are completely mispronouncing it. It's not like the world is overflowing with female K 'names' anyway

A name can seem cool for a person but sound lame on a Hurricane, Take Charley for example, A cool name for a person but I found it a weak name for a Hurricane before it did it's thing in Port Charlotte, Now I dont say that because of all the people whos lives it ruined.

Slightly o/t.. but I will be happy to see any of the first 5 names retired on the 2006 list this year. Not happy because of any potential destruction but because these names just keep getting used over and over. In fact I think the only time any of these names Alberto through Florence were ever used as a major hurricane was Alberto 2000... the rest were duds. That's actually not too easy to do...

Debby (1982) -- Cat 3
This list has been used during a few el ninos tho
1982 and 1994
1988 was a La Nina year and that season was active. I think it was the first season since 1964 to record 3 category 4 hurricanes
