It's also possible that said space aliens have something similiar to the "Prime Directive" in Star Trek not to interfere with species of inferior technology. Perhaps we need to advance our tech a bit before they're willing to talk to us.

Another possibility is that they're like the Ariloulaleelay from the Star Control series of video games. Essentially a caretaker race that works mostly in the shadows and only appear openly and in force if necessary to the survival of our species. The Arilou look very much like Roswell Greys often depicted in sci-fi shows or movies.

A third possibility is that while the Sol star system is of interest humanity isn't really that much of an interest to the aliens.

The notion about the "prime directive" is an appealing one. Think of how the "civilized" explorers on this earth forever changed the cultures of the primitive people they came into contact with. It really bugs me to see natives of some isolated culture somewhere doing traditional things while wearing a Nike T-shirt!

Do you remember that one Star Trek episode where some individuals were accelerated in time so that they could move around others who seemed like statues? If the aliens can master interstellar travel and the implications of time and space, perhaps they could be among us without us even knowing it! And if that's the case, one would imagine that they are not bent on conquest, or else they would have done it already.

Yup, that was "By Any Other Name"... folks from the Andromeda Galaxy, I believe. Interesting concept, didn't even realize the time-space potential. And I thought that buzzing I hear was tinnitus!

That's a good point and well made; however I would think (maybe wishful thinking) that it's a quantum leap in how civilization advances over a few hundred years or even millenia, to civilizations that "might" be millions of years in advance of ours.
