Am I going? What...are you kidding?
I live here. We either leave the island for the weekend or hibernate indoors and do spring cleaning, home repairs, hurricane prep, or watch movies. Even the video stores close, allowing members to keep videos from Thursday until Monday.
We have bike week (the Lone Star Bike Rally). We have lots of spring breakers here, over the course of several different weeks because spring break for one area may not be spring break for the other. We even have Mardi Gras.
None of those compares to the mess of Beach Party Weekend. This is all of those rolled into one -- bikes, bikinis, spring break parties, beads, and lots and lots of debris.
After Allison hit, a lot of us drove around and looked at all the trash blown around. Couldn't help but say, "This looks like Beach Party Weekend." Heck, they even have a special beach cleanup weekend on the weekend following BPW.
Every year.
A lot of Galvestonians want to do away with it. I say, Hey...it's one weekend. No biggie. Just find something else to do for three days and then enjoy the other 362 days a year here...aside from hurricane evacs.
