SITUATION
At 0000 UTC Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica estimated within 15 nautical miles of
12.6 S 139.4 E moving slowly NORTH NORTHWEST. Central pressure 945 hPa.
AREA AFFECTED
Within 90 nautical miles of the centre, extending to 120 nautical miles in the
southern semicircle
FORECAST
Sustained winds to 100 knots near centre increasing to 115 knots within 12 to 24
hours.
Winds above 64 knots within 25 nautical miles of centre with very high to
phenomenal seas.
Winds above 48 knots within 50 nautical miles of centre with very rough to high
seas and moderate to heavy swell.
Winds above 34 knots within 90 nautical miles of centre, extending to 100
nautical miles in the southern semicircle, with rough to very rough seas and
moderate swell.
1200 UTC 22 Apr: centre within 40 nautical miles of 12.5 S 138.6 E.

A CYCLONE WARNING continues for coastal and island communities between PORT
ROPER and MANINGRIDA, including NHULUNBUY and ALYANGULA.
A CYCLONE WATCH extends west for coastal and island communities between
MANINGRIDA and POINT STUART, including CAPE DON.
At 1 pm CST SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE Monica CATEGORY 4 was located about 275
kilometres east of Nhulunbuy, and 350 kilometres east northeast of Alyangula,
moving slowly northwest. The cyclone is expected to slowly intensify and move
westwards across the northern Gulf of Carpentaria.
GALES with gusts to 120 kilometres per hour are expected to develop between
GROOTE EYLANDT and ELCHO ISLAND, including NHULUNBUY and ALYANGULA, late this
afternoon or this evening. GALES may increase to DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to
160 kilometres per hour in this area tonight as the cyclone moves closer to the
coast. GALES near the outer edge of the cyclone may extend as far south as PORT
ROPER tonight or west to MANINGRIDA Sunday morning.
The VERY DESTRUCTIVE core of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE Monica with gusts to 290
kilometres per hour may approach the northeast Arnhem Land coast early on
Sunday.

Cyclone Monica reaches category 5
Cyclone Monica has been upgraded to a category 5 storm as it slowly crosses the Gulf of Carpentaria, towards the Northern Territory coast.
At 5:00pm ACST, Monica was a category 5 storm about 260 kilometres east of Nhulunbuy, on the Gove Peninsula.
Monica is moving north-west and the weather bureau is predicting it will start speeding up tomorrow morning.
The bureau says the very destructive core, with gusts of up to 290 kilometres an hour, could hit the north east Arnhem Land coast tomorrow afternoon.
Communities between Port Roper and Maningrida are on a cyclone warning and the bureau's Mike Bergin says the cyclone watch has been extended westwards along the Top End coast to Point Stuart.
"Generally speaking for the next two days, three days, we expect Monica to move in a general westerly direction," he said.
"So whether it's slightly over land or north of the north coast is difficult to say.
"But certainly we expect to to continue moving in a general westerly direction and that's why the watch has been extended westward to Point Stuart."
Emergency services in the Northern Territory are concerned Monica may cause some low-lying areas to flood.
People in waterfront suburbs in Nhulunbuy are being urged to move to higher ground.

BOM now have it tracking a little further north than previously, which may be good news for Nhulumbuy and Yirrkala, but is probably bad news for the big Aboriginal communities at Elcho Island, Millingimbi, Maningrida, Oenpelli, the Tiwi Islands and possibly Darwin, too.

Monica ain't small.
It would be good if it keeps tracking somewhat to the north now. Might spare some of Arnhem land.

A CYCLONE WARNING continues for coastal and island communities between PORT
ROPER and MANINGRIDA, including NHULUNBUY and ALYANGULA.
A CYCLONE WATCH extends west for coastal and island communities between
MANINGRIDA and POINT STUART, including CAPE DON.
At 7 pm CST SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE Monica CATEGORY 5 was located about 240
kilometres east of Nhulunbuy, and 330 kilometres east northeast of Alyangula,
moving northwest at 7 kilometres per hour. The cyclone should maintain its
current intensity as it moves towards the west northwest across the northern
Gulf of Carpentaria overnight.
GALES with gusts to 120 kilometres per hour are expected to develop between
GROOTE EYLANDT and ELCHO ISLAND, including NHULUNBUY and ALYANGULA, overnight or
early Sunday morning. GALES may increase to DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 160
kilometres per hour in this area later on Sunday if the cyclone moves closer to
the coast. GALES near the outer edge of the cyclone may extend as far south as
PORT ROPER overnight or west to MANINGRIDA later on Sunday.
The VERY DESTRUCTIVE core of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE Monica with gusts to 320
kilometres per hour may approach the northern Arnhem Land coast later on Sunday
or Monday.
GALES may extend further west into Arnhem land and along the coast to POINT
STUART, including CAPE DON, during Monday.
DANGEROUSLY HIGH TIDES could cause EXTENSIVE FLOODING at the coast between
GROOTE EYLANDT and ELCHO ISLAND during Sunday.
HEAVY RAIN is expected to cause significant stream rises and flooding of low
lying areas on Sunday and Monday in northeastern Arnhem land.
