If I remember correctly the last tsunami was generated by a 9.0 Quake right?

So if this one was an 8.0 that's enough to cause significant damage and loss of life it seems :(

I hope a tsunami doesn't happen...

Moreover, I saw a program in the Discovery Channel that they did an underwater expedition to the fault where the earthquake occurred in 2004 and there is evidence is an underwater landslide caused by the earthquake. So, the massive tsunami was not only caused by the earthquake itself, but by the gigantic landslide.

Furthermore, not all massive underground earthquakes create gigantic tsunamis, and that's the main problem in predicting them. It's like not every supercell will create a tornado.

So, it appears this will likely not create a tsunami right?

Earthquakes can generate Tsunamis like in 2004. Landslides are even worse -- they can generate scary mega-tsunamis like the 500 foot one in Alaska  -> http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/20 ... nami.shtml

There's no simple relationship between strength of an earthquake and the size of a resulting tsunami. Too much depends on the type of movement associated with the quake, and also on the shape of the sea floor and coastline of affected areas.

As pointed out above, the Dec. 2004 tsunami was the result of a large underwater landslide associated with a substantially stronger quake. What that means in terms of relative size, though, is something we're just going to have to wait to find out.

On a positive note, the warning system is much better in the Pacific, so chances are most affected areas will have plenty of time to react.

Right...this earthquake could easily be cause by a sudden "jump" in one of the plates along the fault line up...that is the sea floor actually moved up. If this is the case, a tsunami is no doubt going to happen. Keep in mind that, not all earthquakes cause a jumping of the sea floor, and some are larger than others...though, when you get to the higher mags on the richter scale, the size of the tsunami and the size of the earthquake become unrelated.

If I remember correctly, the Tsunami at Lituya Bay reached over 500 meters, which is about 1700' high.

Yes, the Lituya Bay tsunami was closer to 500m than 500' someone got the units mixed.

The tsunami in the bay was actually only 100' tall...it was the splash that reached 1700'.
