Four minutes long...really?

Loma Prieta--the earthquake that struck the San Francisco Bay Area in '89--only lasted for about 15 seconds, and I tell you, even THAT felt like an eternity. But four minutes...ugh.

From what I've heard on CNN though, things don't seem quite as bad as you'd expect. The lady from the hotel in Tonga seemed more upset at the hotel staff's laid-back attitude than the earthquake, so maybe this is a bullet dodged.

According to guy talking on CNN

The 2004 Indian Ocean quake lasted up to 10 minutes.

This earthquake was also reported to be the longest duration of faulting ever observed, lasting between 500 and 600 seconds.

Yeah, I can't imagine why anyone in their right minds would think this would be even close to the BIG Tsunami. That was about as bad as they can get, ever, and it struck areas without a warning. Mass destruction, chaos, and excited posters averted. Sweet.
