What Makes You Feel Rich

#1 Postby Janice » Wed May 03, 2006 3:51 pm

Wow, some people here must be super rich. They have fancy cars, beautiful homes on the water and household help.

I feel rich just getting out for dinner and not having to do dishes.

But, I really feel rich living in Puerto Rico by being able to sit on the beautiful beach with aqua water and it is all free.

What makes you feel rich?

Yes, that is great. Let him out in general population and let the American inmates give him his dues, if you know what I mean. As I said before, death is too easy for him.

I don't know if we were "rich," but my family was very, perhaps overly comfortable. Nice house, a few cars, vacation homes, household staff (only my nanny was live-in,) etc. None of that ever really made me feel rich, on the inside that is. When you can have everything you want regardless of price, how can you know what anything is worth?

Then my father died, and everything was empty. All of the things I enjoyed while he was alive, all of those luxuries and needless things, they all meant nothing and thinking back, those material things were all that I really knew or had of him. It is sometimes still sad for me to think that the only physical remnants he left were impersonal, price-tagged things.

So when I think "rich" now, I think more in terms of value or existential/experiential/teleological worth. In that respect, there are two things that really stand out to me: first, seeing something unspoken and beautiful, so moving that to say anything about it demeans it; and second, those rare but intense bonds that we sometimes find in others, the kind where you might go for months without talking, but upon meeting again, find that it's like you pick up right where you were last.

Yeah, interesting question...definitely.

When I find a gem like the following:

The conduct of the monarchs of the Bourbon family in France, as well as in Spain and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, went far to justify Napoleon's epigram that the Bourbons were equally incapable of learning anything or forgetting anything!

That puts a grin on my face all day!

I was hoping to see a reply like this one. I too love having my family, all home together. Spending time together. Baking cookies from scratch, making homemade pretzels or pizza.

I drive a simple car, wear practical but hopefully stylish clothes (Eddie Bauer look), and I don't care about entertaining formally. Casual is more my style.

However, one thing would make me feel rich, in terms of money - being able to afford a weekend cabin in the woods. Now that would be sweet!

I feel like midas when I catch a big bass or a small one for that matter.
We haven't had much rain at all in several months, and I love watching the birds drinking and bathing in my bird bath.
I feel super rich when I find information to add to my genealogy files. When I knock down a brick wall its like someone handed me gold.
I feel rich having all the people on storm2k who share their expertise on the weather.
Expensive sheets.
My Bucs winning the Superbowl.
When I feel God's presence and guidance.

I grew up with very little money, so material things just don't mean a whole lot to me. Yeah, "things" are nice to have, but most of them are really luxuries. Give me a little plot of dirt to garden in and I'm happy. Am I rich in the monetary sense? Absolutely not. Rich in love and family? You better believe it!

Jen and Mary, I'm with you - my family makes me feel rich with love.

I feel decadent and kinda rich when I buy an expensive bottle of wine, open it and pour it into a beautiful crystal glass. I also feel really good when I brew a special pot of tea, let it steep and pour it into a bone china cup.

I know, I know, -------GET A LIFE KARAN!!!!! Ed, don't you say a word, just keep peddling!!!

I'm not rich by any standard definition of the term, but I don't want for anything.

That in itself makes me rich.

What makes me feel rich? Lighting $1000 cigars with $100 bills.

No, seriously I feel "richest" when enjoying a local sunset with my wife.
