Why I don't own a house. #27
On Sunday, as I was biking through the country, every time I passed by some poor sucker out mowing his 3-acre lawn I thought to myself: "Now which would I rather be doing every Sunday?"

Ironically I just cut my grass tonight too! Before the rain comes.
Our house was brand new 17 years ago and we seeded our entire lawn. We were so proud of that accomplishment and we planted all of our shrubs and trees. Saved a bundle doing it ourselves and planting 1 gallon sized shrubs each time. I loved it when I found a shrub under $6 each back then.
This excitement lasted about 10 years and I must admit, I am looking forward to our condo days. If that's where we'll end up. We could build again, but a small ranch with a small yard to take care of.
I'm not as into yardwork as I used to be. Back then our girls were young and content playing in the yard while I weeded. All day long. I had the nicest yard and kept it up back then. Now it's go-go-go, I'm rarely home longer than 2 hours at a time and that's when I'm sleeping. Can't cut grass in the dark!
So I do hear ya Ed. I'm getting a little weary of this and if we rent or own a condo someday, I know I won't miss firing up a lawnmower.

to mow (about 3/4 acre). I pay my nephew to mow it - my rent AND mow
is cheaper than other folks, since it's family!
Heh, Heh,
There's nothing like kid power! They're so enthusiastic! They'll do anything for money.

O Town - my oldest daughter would cut grass and we'd pay her 1/3 what it would cost to hire the job out. She liked the extra money until her social calendar picked up. My neighbors on each side would cut and our lawn would get so tall, before she'd ever fire up that mower. Can I do it after the Mall? I'll hurry back and do it then? I'd agree to that and then it would be raining. Over time it got to be crazy so I just did it. And no one had to pay me! Now she's in college so it doesn't matter anymore.
Her sister is another story. She could cut for us but balks at just cleaning her room. Wants your one of one attention for big jobs. I've suggested she go out into the garage and just sort out what she doesn't need anymore - old roller blades, etc. Two piles - keep or Goodwill. That is just too hard she says.
When they complain so much, you just want them to stop. And to be honest, when you are the one cutting the lawn you don't have to listen to all that anymore. It's peacefully loud!
Each week after I mow, our youngest (15) looks outside and says - I could do that. Yeah sure, you say that after I cut it.....LOL

Yep, it's getting so that the only way I can motivate them to do anything is when they want something. Well you bet that I'll hold out what THEY want until they do what I want.

I'm just the opposite. I went nuts when I didn't own a home and couldn't plant what I wanted in a yard. I LOVE gardening. Ed and Mary you're both right about cutting the grass sooooo my goal is to make my entire lawn into many beds with ornamental shrubs, plume grasses and lots and lots of perennials!!!

I LOVE the smell of fresh cut grass, funny how smells brings back memories.
I figured you had a lot of fun in the 60's and 70's..

I hate paying the $2,000 tomorrow to remove a monster tree in my yard that creates it's own ecosystem for the neigborhood.. After seeing it sway back n forth during Wilma and my irrigation pipes rise out of the ground I decided it has to be done before cane season starts.. The next cheapest bid was a $1000 more..
