I did read the article. Did you read it, where it said the murder rate is still below the 2003 and 2004 averages?
But I take the article with a grain of salt, like any news article, because I've actually *been* in NOLA to have some anecdotal experiences that say otherwise. That's all sunny and I are saying--you can't take a news article as gospel word because there's always some kind of slant to them.

"C2K, that is not anything to scoff about for sure, but I won't tell you how many were killed in Houston, last night!!!! And it is basically for the same reasons there is a "problem" in NO. Gangs, "drug lords", etc. are always trying to establish or take over turf in the bigger cities. It is ongoing. It may be exacerbated in NO right now since I am sure some are trying to take over large areas while there is little resistance. It is unfortunately a sad part of llife in any larger city in the USA, and I am not only talking about huge metro areas."
agreed... it's horrible...
I wonder how many NOLA katrina refugees in Houston are
responsible for those murders you speek og in Houston last night!
we need to build bigger prisons!!

Just to reiterate... these high crime areas are in isolated parts of the city. I don't know how much clearer we can make it. And of course this place is fine to raise a family. I was raised here, and I know many families that live here and love it. Many people may say that the MGC is a bad place to raise a family with all the casinos. God forbid little Johnny develops a gambling problem. That is all.

You see, it is a remark like THIS

I don't know how true it is, but I've heard MS-13 activity has become alarming along the MGC. If it isn't, God bless ya', because after New Orleans I feel closer to the folks in Mississippi than just about anywhere else--great people. I was over there to help after Camille, and would've been again after Katrina had I not had enough to deal with over here. If it IS true... then that is potentially a serious problem in the making. Personally, I hope it is not true, for my very dear friends who live there.
As to all this negativism about New Orleans, I'm getting just a little SICK of hearing it all the time. When I went down into the Lower Ninth Ward (*gasp*) to see my old home in the Holy Cross neighborhood, I made a stop on St. Claude and walked into an open lounge, an awful lot of eyes fell on me at first, and then I began to talk about my old neighborhood and how dear the whole area was to me and you'd have thought I was a celebrity. These were good, descent hard-working folks TRYING to get things back in order in their lives. I wasn't looking to buy or sell drugs, I wasn't looking for trouble--just minding my own business, and I fared out quite well. Of course my "Nynte-wawd" dialect is something I just can't hide, and people spot it the minute I open my mouth--and I'm proud of it, because despite my accent, I am as articulate in command of the English language as the next guy.
New Orleans is in my blood, no matter where else I roam, I AM a New Orleanian and darned proud of it because it's a city that has given a LOT more than it's received. That "City Park," of which you spoke is built on land once owned by one of my ancestors. To put it bluntly, there are a lot of us who have no compunctions about saying "We LOVE our city" for all of its shortcomings. Yes, we have our problems, and they need to be addressed. I wish the folks who want us to do our own rebuilding would also leave our problems to us as well. We'll clean our house, meanwhile you take care of yours. There WILL be ongoing problems, as vbhoutex pointed out; but to dwell on them only fans the flames of indignance justifiably felt by a people already carrying an incredible burden on their shoulders. One would hope that others would offer encouragement a little more, and do a lot less focusing on the negatives.

Heck. They have had more murders in St Tammany Paish this year, than in years past. The criminals have come in after the storm in cleanup and contruction crews. A man on America's Most wanted was arrested here a few month's back. He was wanted for murdering his wife in, if I remember correctly, N.C. Several wanted criminals have been caught around here. It's not just N.O.
There were several criminals who showed themselves in N.O. after the storm. They aren't walking around on this planet anymore. Several have "left the building" so to speak.

Disappointed in your lack of understanding of humanity in general, Camille 2 Katrina. You seem to live in an isolated environment that is cut off from reality. Wake up, smell the coffee, and realize that the perfect utopia isn't necessarily located in small town America. We're just tougher in urban areas and know how to deal with the realities of living in areas where their are more humans around than in other areas. There are alot of great things about New Orleans and other urban areas...that's why so many come here year in and year out. If you hate it so much, don't come here. There's more than enough that come here where you really won't be missed.
