Holy Crazy Crap! I Found Fifi!

#1 Postby ck30322 » Wed May 10, 2006 12:33 pm

To anyone who's intersted, I've just stumbled on a satellite pic of 1974's elusive hurricane Fifi. :D

Go to the Monthly Weather Review archive page (you can use the link on the NHC website under "Annual Hurricane Season Articles")

Continue on to Volume 103 (1975)

Issue #6 (June) contains an article titled, "Eastern North Pacific Tropical Cyclones, Part 2 by Sharon Towry"

On the top of page eight of the print version you will find a series of photos of hurricane Fifi making landfall on central America and redeveloping into hurricane Orlene in the epac.

If anyone else wants to, they can add the link, I cannot 'cause I skipped the class that day and I don't know how to do it.

In reference to FIFI's notability, to quote the Monthly
Weather Review
, "FIFI will be remembered chiefly
because of the appalling loss of life in Honduras caused
by inland flooding of rivers and streams."
As of the publication of the following 1974 article the
actual number of deaths due to FIFI was estimated between
3000 and 10000.

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/1974.pdf

Additionally, as mentioned in the first post, FIFI is notable as
one of the few "cross-over" cyclones.

Here's a list of the ancient retirees that I've got pics of.
I'm sure that quite a few have been posted here before and are pretty easy to find, so I apologize in advance.

radar of Connie '55
radar of Ione '55
radar of Audrey '57
vis. sat of Donna (in the Florida Straits, very impressive) '60
vis. sat of Carla '61
several vis. sats of Cleo '64
radar and vis. sats of Dora '64
vis. sat of Hilda '64
many pics of Betsy '65
vis. sats of Inez (one in the GOM, one in the caribbean sea) '66
lotsa Beulah '67
lotsa Camille '69
vis. sat of Celia '70
vis. sat of Agnes (stalling over NY/PA) '72
radar of Carmen '74
vis. sat of Fifi (yippie!) '74

any pic beyond that is easy to find

I'd be greatful to anyone who can find a pic (satellite or radar) of Flora, Hattie, or any retiree before 1960 that I don't have.

I'm more interested in hurricane history than in meteorology itself and I've been searching for a pic of Fifi since 1998, so I was pretty happy to finally find one.

Can you post (or send) visible and sat of Dora? I only have the old school radar pic myself.

I don't see the image of Fifi that you are all seeing. Could you indicate in what page it's :?:

To be honest, the visible satellite pics of Dora aren't that great. They're actually pics of Ethel in '64. Dora just happened to be located to Ethel's northwest at the time so she just happened to get in the shot. Dora's radar pics are much better.

The Dora pics are in the Monthly Weather Review archives (just like the Fifi pic). I'll try to remember exactly which issue the pics were in.

I'd love to see the pic of Hurricane Donna of 1960. I've poured over all of Google's results for "satellite 'Hurricane Donna' 1960" and none are pics of Donna. :(

The pic of Dora can be found here:
http://ams.allenpress.com/amsonline/?re ... volume=127

It's in volume #96, issue #9 (September 1968)
In the article: "Some Unusual Aspects Concerning the Development and Structure of Typhoon Billie, July 1967" on page 6

I found one in a book. Considering how new satellites were back then, it's a rather good image.
