*** My criteria is decidedly slanted to overall death toll, (which I think far and away an indicator of "worse"... and consistently said as much.) secondarily I look at total damage and area of impact. Had I tracked Mitch, which I didn't, he'd have been either 1 or 2 on my list... the rest would have remained pretty much unchanged.

The top three on my list are mainly because they either threatened or directly impacted myself or members of my immediate family:

1.) Katrina - I'll never forget the sick feeling I had at 2 a.m. Sunday morning when it became absolutely certain to me that SE Louisiana and the MGC were going to get slammed by a major of historic proportions.

a distant 2.) Charley - The intensification and abrupt turn toward the Charlotte/Lee county area gave me the same feeling, as my parents' (who were away attending my grandmother's funeral in Minnesota) bayside home became directly threatened.

3.) Andrew - the storm I actually lost track of after it decimated Homestead, as I was preparing to go on a much anticipated vacation. Conventional wisdom on Sun/Mon was that the storm was likely headed for Texas after crossing Florida. Needless to say, I got a real shock with the sudden turn in the weather that Tuesday night.

4.) Mitch
5.) Jeanne
6.) Hugo
7.) Gilbert
8.) Ivan
9.) Rita
10.) Wilma

Special mention: Elena (1985) - in terms of purely tracking, surely the worst behaved Gulf storm I ever followed.

In my own area though my top ten, in my lifetime anyway, are:

1. Hybridstorm of 2001 (85 mph gusts, and 50 mph sustained)

2. Bob 1991 (heavy rain, and hurricane force gusts)

3. Grace/Halloween storm of 1991 (heavy rain, and strong winds)

4. Bertha 1996 (heavy rain, and briefly strong winds)

6. Hugo (rain, and strong winds)

7. Floyd 1999 (heavy rain, not much wind)

8. Gloria (rain, and wind)

9. David (rain, and briefly strong winds)

10. Katrina 2005 (rain; with a quick burst of violent conditions within 20 mins of clearing)

For those of you who listed Andrew as worse than Katrina,

Personal perspective/exerience, no doubt. Some are listing evaluations objectively from an overall perspective--others from a much more subjective viewpoint. Either is valid as neither was listed as prerequisite. Had I lived in Homestead and survived, and not experienced much/anything from Katrina, I might well have put Andrew first.

No doubt. Rita was the worst one for me to track, because I was scared to death watching it trek across off the GOM directly towards me. Pretty early on, even when it was forecast to hit South Texas/North Mexico, I made reservations in Jasper just in case. I just had a feeling the track would shift eastward, but really figured more of a Freeport - Galveston area (or so), in which case we'd still be leaving. That's just too close. However, at the same time, as that fear became a reality, I kept thinking in the back of my mind that it woud turn and not really hit here, since that usually happens. While I was hunkered down, listening to the howling wind, trees falling, and buildings/signs being ripped apart, it was still kind of hard to believe. We evacuated for nothing for Andrew in 1992...turned and hit Louisiana....had really no effects. We evacuated for nothing for Lili in 2002...turned and hit Louisiana....had really no effects. You never know when it will actually hit you, so get out of the way every time. It may be inconvenient, but it's worth it. I just should have went farther north, but now I know.

Sorry...I don't really have a top 10 list...there's something bad about many of them and I don't really like rating them like this. It's usually just opinion on how each person was affected, but maybe that's the point of it. lol

I agree... most people by human nature will put as the "worst" the ones that affected them the worst. It was different when we had the poll of the "worst natural disasters" but even that had no set criteria for what constituted "worst". Hence, an amendment to the addage: All politics AND weather, is local.
