LAKEVIEW, Oregon (AP) -- A 13-year-old girl convicted of attempting to kill two classmates by slipping rat poison into their milk was sentenced to up to 12 years in a juvenile detention center.
Holley Sweeney was ordered Friday to remain at the Hillcrest Girls' School in Salem until she is 25 with early release possible if she responds to treatment, the judge ruled.
Earlier this month, the judge found the Lakeview girl and her friend, Stephanie Quesnoy, 12, guilty of plotting and executing a plan to kill two classmates they disliked.
Quesnoy is to be sentenced May 22.
The girls put d-Con rat poison in the milk of two classmates September 19 during lunch at Daly Middle School. The victims noticed green crystalline pellets in the bottom of their milk cartons and neither was injured.
District Attorney David Schutt said the girls planned the poisoning to retaliate against the victims for putting shaving cream in Quesnoy and Sweeney's hair at a slumber party.
Both girls testified that they wanted their victims dead.
Schutt said a psychiatrist, who did not testify, determined Sweeney had trouble distinguishing right from wrong.

You know? I cannot remember when I was in high school, etc. many moons ago ever hearing of all the crap that teens are doing these days. Shooting up school, etc. and I do not blame tv on it either. I grew up watching Roy Rogers, etc. shooting and killing men off horses all the time. It did not make killers of kids back then. I still say parents have a lot to do about it. When a teen living at home tells their parents they cannot go into their private bedroom, that is where the problems starts. Parents need to check their kids bedrooms, computers and cars. These areas would probably shock a lot of parents who would normally say "My child would never do that".

Bring back the good old fashioned Board of Education, or a nice think ruler with a sharp wire, and these problems will go away really quickly
Derek ive never raised kids and I never will. But I think the key here is talking to your children to let them know that there are consequences for unacceptable behavior, then standing behind that when they break the rules. I do have to agree theres nothing wrong with a swat on the posterior when appropriate. Thats the way I was raised. Except for some minor behavioral problems typical of young males when I was a teenager and some problems caused by substance abuse when I was a young adult I turned out OK. I am not in favor of physical abuse however, when you leave marks on your child you cross the line and will do more harm than good. BTW I still have the wooden spoon my mother used on me a few times

Exactly. Infrequently my room and car would be checked...supposedly for cleanliness. I knew better than to have anything there I wasnt supposed to have.

I think another problem is parents are afraid that if they are too hard on their kids, the kids won't like them.
Also, some parents are too lazy to get up and check on their kids. Also, some think the schools and others should raise them.
Raising kids is a full time job, just like the one you go to every day.
I was a single mom 12 years before marrying John and it was hard, but I knew it was my most important job.

of course you let them know well ahead of time what exactly the rules are and what the consequences are. Just like the schools used to do. If you did not follow them, you knew you could expect about 5-10 swats with the Board of Education, or the ruler.
Any marks they left went away, and we did not have the problems with society that we did today. The kids were better for it in the long run, which IMO, is the most important consideration. Not whether they experience transient pain or if they like you

And also parents who willingly spend time with their children. Nuture them, listen to them, truly cherish of having the honor of being their parents.
So many kids today are put into daycare at age 6 weeks, for 10 to 12 hours a day. That just breaks my heart.
I've watched parents drop off kids at latch key as early as 7, when school begins at 9:10 and keep them there past 6 p.m., when it ends. I've seen children standing outside their school (which is locked by this time), waiting with one latch key instructor, checking each car that enters the parking lot (many are there for ball games). I've walked my dog past scenes like this and I want to cry.
Many times I've seen the parents show up, late, and in gym clothes. Nothing burns me up more - knowing these parents got off work earlier and elected to take personal time instead of picking up their child from latch key and/or school.
Okay, I'm done. I feel extremely priviledged to have been able to be a stay at home mom.
This teenager will never lead a normal life as a result of this near tragedy. All for putting shaving cream in her hair, at a slumber party!

More likely there is more to this story than what is being let on. It seems like shaving cream would not want someone to make a murder attempt. It seems like these girls mad have been bullied or betrayed by these girls and murder was what they wanted to do. It is sick in my opnion and these girls should be put behind bars for a long time, but I doubt "whip cream" was the motive.
