I was looking on wiki at the most intense cyclones list and it has Monica listed at 905mb BUT! theres a asterisk, check this out, I dont buy it without hard evidence.

"Official estimate. JTWC estimated 879 mbar and unofficial estimates were 869 mbar (which would make it the most intense recorded tropical cyclone)."

Unfortunately anything that is unofficial has to be discarded. We will never know what was the lowest central pressure in Monica.

Why is the U.S. the only country that flies recon in to tropical cyclones? The typihoon heading for China would be an interesting vortex message- but no one seems to fly in to typhoons on a regular basis. Why is that? We would certainly know more about Monica if there had been some sort of recon out there.

And it is for this precise reason that figures like the 869 have to be taken with less than a grain of salt. Were it not for our INTENSE scrutiny of these things, we well might be claiming Wilma had 858, and 220 mph winds, or that Katrina made landfall with 170 mph... etc...

I followed the Monica threads closesly and she was a VERY impressive storm; but by no means is she anywhere near the most "intense" storm ever IMHO. The official readings on both Rita and Katrina (Wilma a given) were all lower. Unless/until more reliable data on some of these other TC's, some of their estimated extremes will always be suspect. Suffice it to say she definitely was one of the more impressive storms of the season.

We used to cover typhoons but as our Military presence in the region waned and other Countries proved unwilling to kick in some coins we dropped it-though I understand that a WC130 is occasionally staged into Guam because that is US Territory. But A2K is right, no in situ measurements no records it's that simple the 879 from JT and the 869 from UW mean nothing.
