There was definitely a topic already about this, but who wants to dig it up?

I'd say the four FL hurricanes last year and Katrina, Rita, Wilma, and Dennis this year. Only seriously tracked since 2004.

I am wondering why Jeanne is so low on most lists, when it killed more than twice the number that Katrina did

Because the question wasn't what hurricanes caused the most deaths. Like I said in my previous post, it's usually just an opinion on how each person was affected, although obviously not always. Also, it's sometimes which ones they heard the most about on the news. I tend to not answer threads like these, where you rate hurricanes, etc. No offense to Hurricane Floyd. :)

Perhaps they used the same kinds of varied criteria that you used in picking Ivan, (Katrina killed approx. 15 times as many) Wilma (Katrina killed approx 25 times as many) and Georges (Katrina killed roughly 3 times as many people) over Katrina... I guess horror is in the eyes of the awe-stricken.

Agreed, because were it based on death count, even Derek's list would be quite different... as would my own, and quite a few others. :)

I have only been tracking since '96, so some biggies like Andrew or Hugo will not be included, only recent ones.

1. Katrina '05 (nearly took out NO and all of the MS coast, not to mention over 1,500 dead)
2. Mitch '98 (deadliest hurricane since I began tracking)
3. Jeanne '04 (second deadliest hurricane in that time, also caused major damage in Florida)
4. Georges '98 (large trail of death and destruction)
5. Ivan '04 (ditto to Georges, though fewer fatalities)
6. Stan '05 (deadly mudslides in Central America)
7. Wilma '05 (strongest hurricane ever, plus its trail of destruction)
8. Rita '05 (major direct and indirect effects, also worsened damage from Katrina)
9. Charley '98 (just struck me with awe when it hit)
10. Allison '01 (worst TS ever)

[quote="Derek Ortt"]I am wondering why Jeanne is so low on most lists, when it killed more than twice the number that Katrina did[/quote:

Because making a list of the worst hurricanes you've ever tracked is a very open-ended question...and therefore in the eye of the beholder. One of my worst would be Allison...and she was a TS...but I was in Houston when we got 36" of rain and lost a ton of my dissertaion work.

So here are my top ten hurricanes (again...it's a subjective list...based on my own personal "OMG" factor):
1 - Rita
2 - Katrina
3 - Allen (Bet a lot of you who lived through that one forget how you felt when it took up the entire GOM...huh? )
4 - Andrew
5 - Gilbert
6 - Mitch
7 - Wilma
8 - Ivan
9 - Alicia
10 - Charley
Honorable Mention - TS Allison (2001), Ivan, Jeanne, TS Claudette (1979)

Special mention: Elena (1985) - in terms of purely tracking, surely the worst behaved Gulf storm I ever followed

Lol, dont we all know badly behaved storms

heres some dishonorable mentions

Felix 1995
Dennis 1999
Irene 1999
Kyle 2002
Charley 2004
Ivan 2004
Jeanne 2004
Franklin 2005
Ophelia 2005
EPSILON 2005!!!!!!!!

Some arent bad behaved, but insist on hitting everything in sight

Georges 1998 (7 LANDFALLS?)
Floyd 1999
Ivan 2004 (Threatens landfalls on Jamaca, the Caymans, and Cuba, but then scrapes his eyewall over them instead)
Katrina 2005 (2 gulf landfalls in 3 and a half hours is pretty rare)

This is based on my different reactions during each storm. 1-3 really could be in any order because they were each OMG-worthy in their own way... but Rita and her pinhole eye won out.

1. Rita
2. Katrina
3. Wilma
4. Emily
5. Dennis
6. Charley
7. Ivan
8. Mitch
9. Floyd
10. Jeanne

8 of the 10 in the last 3 seasons. The top 5 were all last year.

I track storms all over the World and there's no way I could come up with a Top Ten list. I've followed Camille, Carla (a typhoon), Emma, Olga, Pamela, 3 Ritas (two STYs one being in the top 5 for lowest pressure), Paka, Pongsona, Angela, Linda, Keith (STY), Oliwa (STY), 2 Ivans, 2 Joans, one Iniki, Andrew, Hugo, Monica, Larry, and many other noteworthy storms. Opps, can't forget three Irmas and a Kim.
