Missing boy's body found in pond

By CYNTHIA VEGA / WFAA ABC 8

JOHNSON COUNTY, Texas — The body of five-year-old Anthony Turner was found in a pond just a few yards behind his father's house in rural Johnson County Thursday morning.

The boy had last been seen riding his bicycle with a family friend about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators said it appeared that Anthony lost control and hurtled into the murky stock tank. A body was found in about 15 feet of water in the pond, which is about 50 feet wide.

The search for the missing five-year-old had been expanded earlier Thursday after initial efforts to find him proved fruitless in the area surrounding the home near County Road 600 and Farm-to-Market road 917 south of Burleson.

An Amber Alert was issued late Thursday night. Texas Rangers, the Department of Public Safety, local police, sheriff's deputies, three fire departments and volunteers were involved in the search.

Anthony's parents are divorced. He had been staying with his father in Johnson County. FBI agents in Dallas questioned the boy's mother.

"They're having a rough time with it," said Johnson County Sheriff Bob Alford. "I guess it's in the Lord's hands from here."

Search teams did find an abandoned bicycle at one point overnight, but it was not the one that Anthony had been riding.

Missing Kansas teen found unharmed

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) – A missing 16-year-old girl who was reportedly abducted Tuesday morning was found apparently unharmed, police said.

"She has been located," Police Chief Lee Bynum said late Tuesday.

Kelsey Lynn Stelting disappeared around 6:30 a.m. while getting ready for school, said her mother, Kelly Cox, earlier in the day. The softball player was getting a bag of softball bats from the family car and did not return to the house, Cox said.

Bynum said she was apparently unharmed, but declined to discuss specifics.

"Right now my investigators and the FBI are interviewing her," Bynum said.

Friends and family members on her street were hugging and jumping up and down as the news spread quickly Tuesday night.

Lisa Wilson, her aunt, said the FBI notified the family around 10 p.m. that Stelting had been found unharmed in a residence in Independence.

"For a split second you are overjoyed," she said. "And then fear sets in until they said the words, 'She's OK."'

Based on a 911 call the teen made from her cell phone after she was abducted, Wilson said police believed there was only one kidnapper.

"She doesn't know where she's been," Wilson said. "She's been driving around all day."

Her boyfriend of more than two years, Brandon Kelley, a 17-year-old junior, said he was stunned by the news.

"It's kind of one of those things that melted over you. It finally felt OK," he said as he stood on the street after visiting the girl's home.

A friend and neighbor, 16-year-old Lauren Lester, said she cried when she heard the news from a family member. Asked if she felt good, she said, "Oh, yes."

Earlier in the day, Kelsey's stepfather, Doug Cox, told the Independence Daily Reporter that police believed the teen was approached by a man with a gun who told her to run about six blocks to Woods Lumber Co. or she would be killed along with her family.

Bynum said earlier Tuesday that when she got to Woods Lumber, she was told to get into a white van that apparently was waiting at the business.

The van, whose make and model were not known, was last seen going south on U.S. 75 toward Oklahoma, which is only about 15 miles from Independence, population of about 9,400.

Cox said when she went outside to see where Kelsey was, the doors to the family's car were open, with the keys on the ground. Cox said she didn't see or hear anything before she went outside.

"Shortly after that we called authorities," Cox said in a telephone interview. "We knew something was wrong right away."

The family had offered a $50,000 reward for the girl's safe return.

Dozens had gathered earlier in the evening at the First United Methodist Church, where the girl's family are members, and the neighboring First Baptist Church to pray for the safe return of the teen. She was described as a good student who was a member of the student council and captain of the dance team.

Amber Alert for missing Oklahoma girl

PURCELL, Okla. (AP) — Authorities issued an Amber Alert on Thursday night for a 10-year-old Purcell girl who hadn't been seen for more than 24 hours.

Jamie Rose Bolin was reported missing by her father, Curtis Bolin, when she didn't return home Wednesday night, Police Chief David Tompkins said.

"The last time anyone saw her was a neighbor girl between 4 and 5 p.m.," Tompkins said. "She told us that Jamie was riding her bicycle from school to her house to get a set of keys so she could go to the library."

Police were looking for a white male between the ages of 20 and 30 who was driving a dark blue Chevrolet Tahoe with Texas license plates that had been in the Purcell area on Thursday. The vehicle had dark tinted windows, large shiny wheels and the word "fox" on its back window, police said. A partial license plate reading was "Z69," according to the alert.

An Amber Alert was not issued immediately because there was no witnessed abduction, Tompkins said. Before Purcell police issued the alert, Tompkins said police believed she might have run away.

"We have not a clue right now where she is," Tompkins said.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol, McClain County Sheriff's Department and authorities from Dibble, Lexington, Oklahoma City and Washington, Okla., were also assisting with the search.

Jamie's grandmother, Rose, said the family had no reason to believe that she ran away.

"She was a pretty good student when she wanted to be and she just recently joined the Girl Scouts," Rose told the Norman Transcript. "We're praying that if she is somewhere, worst case scenario that someone is out there who took her, I'm hoping she hears me, she sees me on TV, or something and can hear me say that she's not in trouble ... We want her, we miss her and we need her home."

Authorities believe the girl was last seen riding a green bicycle and wearing a pink shirt with either white shorts or blue jeans. She is about 4 feet tall, 110 pounds and has red hair, blue eyes and freckles.

Purcell is about 160 miles north of Dallas-Fort Worth.

Amber Alert for Oklahoma girl cancelled

Authorities seal off apartment

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – An Amber Alert for a missing 10-year-old girl was cancelled early Friday evening and authorities had sealed off a Purcell, Okla., apartment, a FBI spokesman said.

Oklahoma City FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said that the apartment is near where the family of Jamie Rose Bolin lives in Purcell, but deferred all further questions to Purcell police or the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Johnson said a 9 p.m. press conference in Purcell was scheduled.

State, federal and local law enforcement officers have joined in the search for Jamie, who hasn't been seen for two days.

About 100 FBI agents and computer technicians, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and investigators from a three-county area are helping officers in the McClain County community to find Jamie.

Jaime's father, Curtis, reported her missing when she didn't return home Wednesday night, Police Chief David Tompkins said.

"The last sighting of her was probably, as best we can tell, was approximately 3:50 p.m. at the Purcell Library. Beyond that, we don't know where she is. We don't have any idea of her current whereabouts," FBI spokesman Gary Johnson told reporters at a Friday morning briefing.

An Amber Alert was not issued immediately because there was no witnessed abduction and investigators thought it was possible that the child might have run way, Tompkins said.

Since then, police have received information Jamie may have been with a young man and possibly got into a vehicle the day she disappeared, Johnson said.

"We do have what we believe at this time to be fairly credible evidence that she may be with an individual, a white male in his 20s, tall, thin with no facial hair and possibly an earring in his left ear," Johnson told reporters at a Friday morning briefing.

Authorities had a more specific description of the vehicle, which they said was a dark blue, late model Chevrolet Tahoe with dark-tinted windows, custom black leather seats with red trim on the side and the initials "K.C." stitched on the headrest.

The vehicle, which also had a Pioneer stereo with a movable faceplate in the dashboard, had the word, "FOX," on its back windshield with the head of a fox superimposed on the "O," Johnson said. The word could be a racing logo, Johnson said.

The sport utility vehicle had Texas license plates, which may have included "Z69" in the number, officials said.

Reporters also asked Johnson and Tompkins about reports that the child had been chatting with someone online at the library.

"At this point, we truly have no idea who this individual is," Johnson said. "Is there an Internet connection to this case? That is a possibility, certainly. But at this point, we have not be able to determine that."

The FBI scanned hard drives from several library computers, which had been deemed obsolete and exchanged them for new ones earlier this week, library branch manager Alicia Smith told The Oklahoman.

Jamie's grandmother, Rose Fox, has said the family had no reason to believe that the child was a runaway.

"She's a baby for crying out loud," Fox said, worry in her voice. "She's not a grownup. She's not a teenager. She's a child."

Authorities said Jamie was wearing a pink shirt with either white shorts or blue jeans when she was last seen. She is about 4 feet tall, 110 pounds and has red hair, blue eyes and freckles.

Missing girl found dead in Okla. apartment

PURCELL, Okla. (AP) – A body found in a Purcell apartment Friday is that of a 10-year-old girl missing for more than two days, Purcell police chief David Tompkins said.

Tompkins said during a Friday night news conference that authorities found the body of Jamie Rose Bolin in the apartment of 26-year-old

Tompkins said Underwood has been arrested. Tim Kuykendall, the District Attorney for McClain County, said he plans to file first-degree murder charges against Underwood on Monday.

Kuykendall called Jamie's killing one of the most "heinous" crimes he'd seen in his career as a prosecutor and said he will seek the death penalty in the case.

Tompkins said authorities still are awaiting confirmation from the medical examiner that the body is that of Jamie but that they're certain that is the case.

A tip by the FBI, one of several law-enforcement agencies that searched for Jamie, led authorities to Underwood's apartment.

Authorities canceled an Amber Alert for Jamie earlier in the evening and sealed off the apartment where the body was found, Oklahoma City FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said. He said the apartment is near where Jamie's family lives.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Chris West said the Amber Alert, which was issued Thursday night, "probably wouldn't have helped us recover Jamie," but offered no further details. Tompkins said the information released in the Amber Alert had little or no connection with Jamie's killing.

State, federal and local law enforcement officers joined in the search for Jamie. About 100 FBI agents and computer technicians, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and investigators from a three-county area assisted local officers.

Jaime's father, Curtis, reported her missing when she didn't return home Wednesday night, Tompkins said earlier Friday. Tompkins said the last sighting of Jamie was at about 3:50 p.m. that day at the Purcell library.

An Amber Alert was not issued immediately because there was no witnessed abduction and investigators thought it was possible that the child might have run away, Tompkins said.

2 Missing Milwaukee boys found in McGovern Park Lagoon

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

After weeks of investigation, intensive searches and a tremendous outpouring of community support, the search for two missing boys came to a tragic end early Saturday.

After two bodies found in the McGovern Park lagoon were positively identified as those of Purvis Virginia Parker, 11, and Quadrevion Henning, 12, an autopsy determined that both boys died of accidental drowning, and their bodies had likely been at the lagoon's bottom the entire time, said Jeffrey M. Jentzen, Milwaukee County medical examiner.

Police speculate that Purvis, who was not a strong swimmer, fell into the lagoon and that Quadrevion jumped in to try to save him.

Neither boy showed signs of injury, and there was no indication of foul play, Jentzen said.

"This was nothing more than a tragic, tragic accident," Milwaukee Police Chief Nannette Hegerty said, adding that, pending further information, the case was closed.

The temperature of the water when they fell in isn't known, but divers had to break through ice a few days later to search, Hegerty said.

Jentzen said it would have taken just 10 to 15 minutes for the boys to die of hypothermia in such conditions and said the cold water could have incapacitated them almost immediately.

Warm weather a factor
A man walking with his son through McGovern Park called 911 shortly before 7:30 p.m. Friday after spotting a body floating in the water.

Police and the Fire Department Dive Rescue Team arrived a short time later, and Purvis' body was recovered from the lagoon. Quadrevion's body was discovered by Fire Department divers about 9:45 p.m.

Police believe Friday's warm weather caused the bodies to float to the surface.

The boys were last seen when they told Quadrevion's grandfather, Garry Henning, that they were going out to play basketball at the park about 3:30 p.m. on March 19.

When by early evening they hadn't returned, Henning called police.

The two children became the subjects of intensive searches by police and members of the public, and the pair's disappearance drew national attention. A reward fund was established and now totals about $70,000.

The lagoon was searched multiple times. Hegerty said the lagoon, which is about 20 feet deep at its deepest point, had "quite a bit of mud and muck in it" that may have hampered searchers.

Hundreds of people throughout the community passed out fliers bearing the boys' pictures and searched wooded areas near where they were last seen.

Remnants of the search effort could be seen Saturday.

The ubiquitous fliers were still taped to the windows of many northwest side businesses.

Along W. Hampton Ave., white ribbons that volunteers had tied around the trees blew softly in the breeze.

And the Web site with information about the boys, which got more than 300,000 hits from around the world, featured their photos set against a black background and this simple request:

"Please pray for Quadrevion and Purvis."

An uncommon case
All along, experts said the boys' disappearance was uncommon. Neither had tried to run away from home before, and both were younger than typical runaways.

At the same time, experts said it would be rare for two boys that age to be kidnapped together.

Police maintained they were looking at every possible explanation for the boys' disappearance, but after a week of searching and a lack of evidence, they believed the boys may have been victims of a crime.

The boys' families remained together inside their homes most of Saturday.

Purvis' aunt, Valerie Virginia, sat with other relatives outside the family home Saturday morning.

"We are sad, but we have closure now," she said.

Hegerty and Mayor Tom Barrett thanked the community, the NAACP and cooperating law enforcement agencies for their help in the search.

Barrett said he spoke with the families of both children to give his condolences Saturday.

"Both families obviously are very emotional, but both used the word 'closure.' And I think we recognize what they are saying: The uncertainty is horrible, and there is no happy ending here, but they need closure in their lives," Barrett said.

For all the time they'd spent in front of television cameras pleading for information from the public and granting interview after interview in the last month to keep the case in the public eye, Saturday was a day to be spent alone with the knowledge that the search was over, said Dennis Frazier, Quadrevion's uncle.

While TV trucks lined the street in front of Quadrevion's grandfather's home on N. 53rd St. early Saturday, by midafternoon most had left.

"I told all the camera crews out there it was time to pack up and go home," Frazier said.

Frazier said knowing Quadrevion's fate did bring some level of comfort.

"Regardless of the autopsy, yesterday has brought closure to the Henning and the Parker family and the whole United States," Frazier said.

Through it all, the family had held out hope that Quadrevion and Purvis would be found safe.

"Of course that's what everyone was hoping for, that the boys would come home alive," Frazier said. "That is our will, but that's not the way it works. It's God's will."

Amber Alert issued for S. Texas teen

By CAROLYN CAMPBELL / KHOU CBS 11

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas - A 16-year-old girl from Liberty County has been missing since Monday, officials said.

A regional Amber Alert was issued for Khristina Hope Wagoner. Officials said she was last seen in Cleveland, Texas, around 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Khristina is 5 feet, 2 inches tall with brown hair and hazel eyes. She weighs about 175 pounds.

The suspect is 38-year-old John Glover, who is apparently on probation in Orlando, Fla., for felony theft and was listed as an absconder.

A dispatch operator in Natchez, Miss., said the suspect was arrested there earlier this year for being a fugitive from Florida.

The operator said she'd been alerted that Glover and Khristina may be headed to Natchez.

Glover is described as a white male, 6 feet tall with brown hair and a shaved head. He has a thin-lined beard and pierced ears.

The pair are believed to be in Glover's 1979 Chevy pick-up truck. The front part of the car is black, and the back is red. The license plate is from West Virginia, and the number is 1CJ-477.

The relationship between the suspect and the teen is unclear.

If you have seen either of them or know anything about Khristina's disappearance, please contact the Liberty County Sheriff's Department at (936) 336-4500.

I just hate seeing all these kids coming up missing. Our population is too high and we have too many weirdos out there.

I hope they find the little guy and he is safe.

Missing baby found safe in Dallas

DALLAS, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - A 6-week-old boy abducted from his mother in Los Angeles was found safe in Dallas Wednesday afternoon.

FBI Special Agent Lori Bailey said Devon Calloway will be turned over to Dallas County Child Protective Services for evaluation, and then returned to Los Angeles. She did not give an exact location where the infant was found.

Earlier Wednesday, Los Angeles police alerted authorities in North Texas that the child was missing after he was taken from his mother's arms on Monday. They identified two suspects, Annette Betts Bryant and Sylvia Nunn, who were driving a black or gray Ford Explorer.

Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Los Angeles bureau, said the infant was turned over to FBI agents through negotiations with a Dallas-based attorney representing the two alleged abductors. She said arrests in the case may be forthcoming.

Agent Bailey said the Dallas Police Department, the Ellis County Sheriff's Office and the Cedar Hill Police Department assisted in the infant’s recovery.

Amber Alert stamp to be unveiled Thursday

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Postal Service is issuing a new stamp honoring the Amber Alert system used to find missing children.

The alert system was created in 1996 after the kidnapping and killing of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman. It is designed to notify surrounding communities of an abduction so people can alert police of suspicious activity within the first few hours of the crime.

The Postal Service will unveil the stamp at a ceremony in Washington on Thursday, which is National Missing Children's Day. A second ceremony will be held in Arlington, where Amber was kidnapped.

Illustrated by artist Vivienne Flesher, the new stamp depicts a mother and child embracing and says, "Amber Alert saves missing children." It will be available nationwide Thursday.

Women arrested in kidnapping case

WAXAHACHIE, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - Two women accused of abducting a 6-week-old boy from Los Angeles are in custody in Ellis County after the infant was found safe, FBI officials said Thursday.

Annette Betts Bryant, 47, of Midlothian, and Sylvia Nunn, 53, of Compton, Calif., were taken into custody late Wednesday after their Dallas-based lawyer negotiated the safe return of Devon Calloway to an FBI agent, Los Angeles FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Each woman has been charged with kidnapping, according to a felony complaint filed by the district attorney in Los Angeles County.

The baby was turned over to Child Protective Services officials in Dallas for a medical evaluation, and would be returned to California by a representative from Los Angeles County CPS, Ms. Eimiller said.

Investigators said they believe the women snatched the boy after they unsuccessfully tried to buy him from his mother. The pair then drove an SUV from California to North Texas with the infant.

Ms. Eimiller said the suspects probably would be arraigned in state court later Thursday, and would face extradition proceedings to return them to Los Angeles.

Kidnap suspect claims she adopted baby

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) — A wealthy woman accused of kidnapping a 6-week-old baby was in fact adopting the boy, her attorney said.

Police, however, say Annette Pinkard, a 47-year-old real estate professional from the Dallas area, stole Devon Calloway on May 22 after the boy's teenage mother rejected her offer to buy him.

Pinkard (who was identified by police in earlier reports as Annette Bryant) and her cousin, Sylvia Nunn, 53, are being held in Ellis County on $500,000 bond each and face extradition to California. They are charged with one count each of kidnapping and child stealing, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Authorities say the women saw Devon with his mother, 17-year-old Dominique Calloway, at a store and offered to buy the child for $6,000. Calloway said that she was tempted but refused the offer and let the women drive her to her South Los Angeles home.

Two days later, the women returned to repeat their offer and, when Calloway allowed them to hold Devon, drove off, authorities say. They were arrested on May 24 in Midlothian, Texas, where Pinkard lives with her husband in a sprawling, manor-style home with a three-car garage, circular driveway and backyard pool.

Pinkard's attorney, Scottie Allen, told a different story.

He said the episode began when his client and Nunn, who lives in Compton, Calif., came across Devon's 2-year-old sister "unaccompanied and running around outside." They found the mother, went home with her to her duplex, and offered to adopt both children, he said.

Calloway agreed to let Devon go and Pinkard had her sign a form relinquishing her parental rights, Allen said. Pinkard planned to return to California to apply to a court for adoption, he said.

She was "scared to death" when she learned about the kidnapping investigation while driving back to Texas with Devon, he said.

Sylvia Nunn's lawyer, Heath Harris, also said that Nunn and Pinkard were trying to help Calloway.

Los Angeles police are skeptical.

Allen acknowledged Pinkard was convicted of forgery in 2000, which Det. Maria Rivas said could cast doubt on the validity of her agreement with Calloway. Nunn's attorney said his client also has a criminal record but not an extremely serious one.

Rivas said other young mothers have come forward to say that Pinkard tried to buy their babies, Rivas said.

Dominique Calloway also denied allowing her baby to be taken.

"I didn't sign no papers. They lie," she said.

Search continues for kidnapped newborn

LUBBOCK, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) — The suspected kidnapper of a 4-day-old baby posed as a nurse and made repeated visits to the mother's hospital room before visiting the family at home and taking the baby, according to police and the baby's family.

Police searched overnight for Priscilla Nicole Maldonado and the woman suspected of snatching her. The Hispanic infant, who weighs 5 1/2 pounds, was abducted from nearby her Lubbock home on Sunday afternoon. An Amber Alert was issued.

The suspected kidnapper had visited Priscilla and her mother, Erica Ysasaga, several times at University Medical Center before the family went home on Friday. She wore medical scrubs, asked questions about the baby and sometimes helped with small tasks such as retrieving towels, the family said.

"She knew a lot of things that sounded like a nurse would know," Priscilla Madrid, Ysasaga's sister, told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal for its Monday editions.

Police said they don't believe the woman, who identified herself to the family as Lisa Stewart, was a hospital employee based on the color of her scrubs and the fact that she was not wearing a name tag.

"It certainly does appear at this point that there was some time put into it," Lubbock police Lt. Roy Bassett said.

He said no one at the hospital was familiar with the woman and there was "nothing to indicate right now that she was an employee of any kind."

A hospital official declined to comment when contacted by The Associated Press late Sunday.

Ysasaga said the woman asked for her address when she left the hospital, saying she had a swing and some clothes for the baby.

When she visited the family early Sunday afternoon, the suspect and the baby disappeared when Ysasaga was momentarily distracted with her 2-year-old son, police said.

Priscilla was diagnosed with jaundice on Sunday and needs medical care, the Avalanche-Journal reported. She was last seen wearing a diaper and white socks and wrapped in a blue receiving blanket.

Police described the suspect as a white woman between the ages of 30 to 40, weighing 140-150 pounds and having dirty blond hair. She was last seen wearing a red dress with yellow flowers.

Police also were looking for a red Pontiac four-door car and a white van, which were seen in the area of the disappearance in central Lubbock.

'Nurse' blended in before taking infant

LUBBOCK, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) — The woman accused of abducting a newborn girl apparently blended in with hospital staff in the days before the child's disappearance.

Nurses on duty at the time the woman visited the newborn, Priscilla Nicole Maldonado, and her family remembered seeing her on repeated visits to the hospital, police said.

But no one asked why she wasn't wearing the correct color of hospital scrubs or why she didn't have an identification badge, officials said. Nurses from doctors' offices and other medical facilities often wear scrubs to work and sometimes come to visit newborns and their families, Lubbock police Lt. Roy Bassett said.

"From what I understand, they don't check and identify every possible visitor who comes to the hospital," he said. "She didn't make any attempt to take the baby from the hospital and didn't spark any suspicions."

Police were still searching Monday for the infant and the suspected abductor, who befriended the mother, Erica Ysasaga, while she was in the hospital and later stole the baby from her home. Priscilla has jaundice, and blood tests before her abduction showed her condition worsening, University Medical Center spokesman Greg Bruce said.

"Time is paramount," Bassett said, adding that police were following up on a "significant number" of calls Monday.

"We're obviously still canvassing the neighborhood and talking to everyone we possibly can," Bassett said.

In the hospital, the suspected kidnapper led Ysasaga led the mother to believe she was a nurse by dressing like one, asking questions about the baby and sometimes retrieving towels, the family said. When Ysasaga was discharged, the woman asked for her address, saying she had a swing and some clothes for the baby.

"She was concerned all the time about my baby so I thought she was a nurse," Ysasaga told KAMC-TV.

On Sunday, the woman visited the family's home and told the mother she wanted to put the newborn in a baby pageant.

"I said, 'No, my baby is sick. She can't be out in public,"' Ysasaga said. "She said they would pay me $100 and my baby would win stuff."

The woman then said she had relatives on the next block and wanted to show them the baby. Ysasaga said she would go with her, but the woman disappeared with the newborn while Ysasaga was momentarily distracted.

"My son ran ahead of me so I tried to reach over and grab him and when I did that, I turned around. Just like that, my baby was gone," she said.

In trying to gain Ysasaga's confidence, the woman gave Ysasaga a driver's license number and Social Security number "so that you have some confidence that you know who I am," Bassett said the woman told Ysasaga. Bassett said neither number matched with the name the woman had given the mother.

Ysasaga told police she saw two vehicles—a red Pontiac four-door car and a white van—leaving the area but did not see the woman or the baby in one of them, Bassett said.

Authorities don't believe the woman was a hospital employee based on the color of her scrubs and the fact that she was not wearing a name tag.

"To the best of our knowledge, it's not an employee of our hospital," Bruce said. "The description of what the employee was wearing, how the employee was acting while they visited with the mother in the hospital is not consistent with any of our staff."

Police on Monday were checking surveillance video from the hospital to try to identify the woman.

Bassett said police believed the abduction was planned over a number of days.

"I think that at the very least she has some local ties," he said.

Police: Missing 5-day-old baby found

LUBBOCK, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) - A missing 5-day-old baby was found Monday evening, more than 24 hours after her mother said she was abducted by a woman who had posed as a nurse in medical scrubs. Priscilla Nicole Maldanado was taken to University Medical Center. Hospital spokesman Greg Bruce said the baby was fine.

There were no immediate details on where the baby was found.

Erica Ysasaga had told police that a woman who had visited her several times in the hospital after she gave birth last week disappeared with her daughter Sunday after Ysasaga had gone home with the baby.

Earlier Monday, police had studied hospital surveillance video and went door to door in a race to find the baby and the woman who stole the newborn.

The woman had apparently blended in with hospital staff in the days before the child's disappearance and befriended Ysasaga.

Nurses on duty at the time the woman visited the newborn and her family remembered seeing her on repeated visits to the hospital, police said. But no one asked why she was not wearing the correct color of scrubs or why she had no identification badge, officials said.

Nurses from doctors' offices and other medical facilities often wear scrubs and sometimes visit newborns and their families, police Lt. Roy Bassett said.

"From what I understand, they don't check and identify every possible visitor who comes to the hospital," he said. "She didn't make any attempt to take the baby from the hospital and didn't spark any suspicions."

In the hospital, the kidnapper led the mother to believe she was a nurse by dressing like one, asking questions about the baby and retrieving towels, the family said. When Ysasaga was released, the woman asked for her address, saying she had a swing and some clothes for the baby.

"She was concerned all the time about my baby, so I thought she was a nurse," Ysasaga told KAMC-TV.

At the time of her abduction, the baby girl, Priscilla Nicole Maldonado, had jaundice, a common complication in newborns that causes a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes from a buildup of pigment in the blood.

On Sunday, the woman visited the family's home and told the mother she wanted to put the newborn in a baby pageant. "I said, `No, my baby is sick. She can't be out in public,'" Ysasaga said. "She said they would pay me $100 and my baby would win stuff."

The woman then said she had relatives on the next block and wanted to show them the baby, according to Ysasaga. Ysasaga said she wanted to go with her, but the woman disappeared with the newborn while Ysasaga was momentarily distracted by her young son.

"My son ran ahead of me so I tried to reach over and grab him and when I did that, I turned around. Just like that, my baby was gone," she said.

To gain Ysasaga's confidence, the woman gave Ysasaga a driver's license number and Social Security number, according to police. But neither number matched the name the woman had given the mother.

Missing baby reunited with parents

MANSFIELD, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) - A 7-month-old baby missing for more than 20 hours was reunited with his parents Sunday night.

Joshua Matthew Martin appeared healthy upon his return, police said.

An Amber Alert had been issued for the baby after his mother told police he disappeared with her 37-year-old stepfather, Larry Stoxstell.

The baby's mother said they had returned from shopping and Stoxstell and the baby disappeared while she took her older child inside late Saturday. Joshua was reported missing about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Officer Danny Baas said the family initially thought Stoxstell would return with the infant and they waited before an Amber Alert was issued.

Baas said Stoxstell had given police "some reasons for his absence."

"I didn't take the baby," Stoxstell said as police led him away in handcuffs. Police said he was taken into custody on an unrelated charge.
