Rita Babies to Arrive Soon
Another baby boom could be headed to Southeast Texas, and it's all thanks to one of the worst natural disasters the area has ever seen.
June 24th marks exactly nine months since Hurricane Rita hit, but the babies due from couple’s “extra time together” during the evacuation should be here in about two to three weeks.
Christus Saint Elizabeth Hospital is preparing for a bundle of babies this summer; all 19 maternity rooms are expected to be full starting very soon.
“Several of the physicians that we have here have reported that they have a 50% increase in their delivery expectations for the month of June,” said nurse manager Amy LeLeux.
Belle Maman, a maternity store, opened the same month Hurricane Rita hit, so in a way, the store is a Rita baby itself.
“I've heard that summers tend to be slower for retail,” said owner Krista Oliphant, “but we`re hoping it won't be so for us because we're having all these new mommies to be.”
The name Rita really hasn’t been that popular of a baby name in years. The last time it was even in the top 50 was 1931.

Well, umm....
Most couples are very busy with work and/or children, etc. and when work comes to a halt, obviously they have more time. It doesn't necessarily mean they weren't active before, but clearly you'd have more time if you're sitting around a hotel room instead of in your hometown going to work daily and just tending to life's daily activities. That's just common sense. This is not odd in the least. In fact, it's quite common after something like this. I just wanted to share some GOOD news that came from Rita.
The same thing happened after the ice storm here in January 1997. With everyone's electricity out for about a week and nearly everything closed, couples had a lot of time to spend together, trying to stay warm. 9 months later...a local baby boom!
And yeah, I'm sure they know of condoms, but many married couples don't use them, and they're happy to be having a baby.
