A Bit Of Good Advice

#1 Postby Janice » Sun May 28, 2006 12:27 pm

Is there a bit of advice that someone gave you and it was greatly appreciated and you live by it today?

Me... One of my bosses told me to make copies of important information I was dealing with in case something came up, she said always cover my butt. So, that is what I do. Thank God, I have not had to use it. I keep copies of everything important in case being called up on it.

A co-worker this past week said that EMAIL is not really electronic mail but the E stands for Evidence Mail.

My father's advice is priceless but I can't post it on the forum.

My dearly departed MIL always said - if you can't say anything nice about someone, then don't say anything at all.

Better yet, she actually lived by this saying. I honestly only heard her say something remotely critical once and only once, and it was more or less an observation, not a criticism. Sure wish I could be 1/10th the wonderful person she was.

Janice - you and me both! It's very hard to live that saying but my MIL did. She was a true gem, as close to a Saint here on earth my one BIL likes to say. I think he's right. We all miss her terribly (she passed away 13 years ago). When someone is that good, you miss them all the more. Those funny MIL jokes? They never applied in my case!

We can at least try though......you go first! he he

My dad was very big on these pretty simple rules. Don't lie, cheat or steal.

I know a man who took a business from a card table and folding chairs in a spare room to now owning his own building and also having a garage full of antique cars which he collects. He told me that early-on, he was about to give up and go back to the security of a "real" job and a steady, predictable paycheck. He then opened a fortune cookie after a meal. He saved the little paper slip and showed it to me. It read "You only fail when you stop trying". He kept trying and I bet he cleared the millionaire level some years ago.

Yes, my parents always told us that too... Pay yourself first. So we always have a nice bit of savings taken out of each paycheck. Once you do this, you learn to budget with the balance.

When I started college, my father told me not to major in "Management", because you need to know what it is that you are managing. I went into Accounting instead. I truly believe that you need to know the process before you can tell someone else how to do it.

Some on these boards have considered my advice and counsel as a good thing over the years.

They have come to know that I will help and encourage whenever I can, but perhaps one reason others have leaned my way over the years is that I most often give advice when it is sought, not when it isn't.

Trust is something you earn over years and years, but it can be broken and lost forever in a matter of seconds.

Value trust as you would value your very best friend.
