Two brothers, 9 and 10 years older than me. I always, repeat, always wanted a sister. My mom put on weight as she got older and when I was quite young, I would ask if she was pregnant. She wasn't too happy when I asked that question!

One of my closest friends from high school is one of 8. Her mother had all 8 within 9 years. No multiple's, all single pregnancies. One time she had 2 children in the same calendar year. They had two bathrooms back to back, for the kids with tub and shower stalls and double sinks (parents had their own bathroom). At one time 4 kids could be bathing, another could be still be brushing teeth and the rest she said. I imagine they rarely closed the doors. How I ever found one of these bathrooms available when visiting is a mystery too! Her family always interested me since mine was so small, boring and quiet.

I know what you mean George. I actually had a "sister" when I was in high school that I called my sister who was a very close friend. We did many things together, but I haven't heard from her now in at least 10 years and haven't seen her since I graduated high school. She is the closest I have ever come to having a sibling. I can't say I am jealous of those with siblings, but I do wonder what it would have been like to have a true sibling.

I have one true brother (unfortunately)

Here is the confusing part...
My mom remarried (..... a step brother and a step sister (step brother in law)

My dad remarried (..... a step sister (step brother in law) and another step sister) PAIN IN THE ARSE!!!!! (both)

I'm the oldest out of the kids.... not counting the brother in laws

It is just me and my sister. I have four children total. Three that are living and one that is heaven. My three girls seem to be close but they do fight a lot. A Lot!

My sister and I were not close until I got married and had children. Once she got married and had children our relationship with one another is strong. We do all kind of funny things. Sometimes I think our children think we are nutty as a fruitcake.

I have an older sister and a younger brother. Yep, I'm the middle child and have no middle child syndrome.

Speaking of only children - I felt like one growing up. With brothers so much older than I was, they wanted nothing to do with me! By the time I can recall my childhood, they were teenagers. They were hardly ever home! And when home, if I even called their names I heard - scram, beat it Mary. Of course I was a little annoying too, ya know.

Growing up I faithfully watched many family shows - The Waltons (#1 fave show of all time), 8 is Enough, Little House, Family, etc. Even the safe but goofy Brady Bunch. Talk about a perfect example of the middle child syndrome? Jan Brady! I can still hear "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia...." - LOL! I wanted to be a from a large family so much, that I seached for family shows to watch.

And speaking of siblings, I have noticed that in large families when the siblings are grown adults, they almost always revert back to their place in the family - at holiday functions, reunions and most especially a family crisis - illness, death, funeral, will readings, etc. That's when it's kinda nice to be from a small family (even if I felt like an only child growing up). And finally, I did grow close to my brothers once I got into my 20s. It took that long though - ;-)!

Most family functions are held at my house and during family crisis it seems I've always been the one to organize and take charge. I don't know whether it's because I'm more assertive, more organized or just so nice to be around that they can't stay away!!!!!lol jk Since my Dad died in the 70's that's the way it's been.

Karan - yep, in most families I've observed (ex, one of 8 and my husband now is one of 6), there's always a bossy one, a planner, a spoiled one, an overlooked/taken for granted one, a rowdy one (major partier perhaps), etc.

There's a funny xmas/holiday movie from the 90s called Home for the Holidays. Not fall down laughing but cute, about knowing your place in the family. How when you return home for visits, in your parents' eyes, you are that little girl or boy again. Even if you're a parent yourself now. I recommend it if you ever see in cable.

Mary, do you think that those people ever figured out what was making that happen?
