im sure it still happens with humans. many doctors at one time routinely prescribed anti-biotics to patients with viruses.

The same thing happens with animals that happens to humans: anitibiotics are needlessly prescribed and the nasty organisms that the antibiotics are supposed to kill build up defenses against the antibiotics, rendering them useless. Any antibiotics also have some undesirable side effects, such as gastrointestinal upsets etc, further often needlessly aggravation the original condition for which they were prescribed.
