Either the NAVO map is "broken" or there is already some 87+ F water in and near the Loop Current. Wow. This is quite impressive for so early in the season- I guess. I don't remember seeing this much warm water there before so early. Thoughts?

Aren't Gulf temps just about normal for early June? Here's the latest SST anomaly map. Shows near normal temps across the Gulf. I don't think there's much unusual out there. It's even cooler than this time last year.

SST's can be boiling with the upper level winds we have now and you still wont get a storm. I really would be surprised to see anything in the next 10 days.

I said nothing about upper level winds, I said that the SST's are warm enough to kick up a cat 5, I didnt say that they would.

I have an innocent request for the upcoming season...Is there any way that we could voluntarily all stop starting threads with this type of title...If you want to say "holy smokes," maybe say "Holy smokes, look at these water temperatures"..instead of "look at this"...When the season really gets going, these sensational headlines can become distracting to some of us old haggard hurricane freaks. Thanks to anyone who'll go along with me on this

what about the title? did you expect a Cat 5 to currently be bearing down on the ocean (see...no ocean was harmed in the making of this post...) because the title said look at this? just wondering...at least it wasnt on a stray t-storm over Alaska or something (no offence) and I do find it being pretty interesting on how warm the waters are...even if they are "normal" JMHO of course...

I don't have any problem with "spicing" up a thread title...just, please, give a hint about the contents...it may not seem like a big deal now, but when a Cat 5 IS bearing down on a coastal area, it will be helpful to those people who are desperately searching for info to be able to sort through the massive amount of new threads that contain info that is totally irrelevant to their particular situations. Trust me, this happened a LOT last year when some of us were preparing for Katrina.

By the way, I didn't mean to hi-jack this thread...in fact, this is a very important topic (the loop current) that will be very important this season. Thanks!

Yeah, hurricanetrack I think the link is broken....something must be screwed up...however the latest buoy SSTs to the east of the loop current show up as around 84 degrees Fahrenheit...interesting....[/b]

NO! NO! NO! The Loop Current is further east...your reading is in the same area as a cold eddy...

Not quite, but it could form a solid Cat 2 or 3...maybe Cat 4 if a slow-mover...fortunately, that area is filled with shear as well.

Very true we can have water temps in the upper 80's and no development because these shearing winds are blowing the tops of these systems that try to form. You need winds less than 10 knots.

Nah...wasn't expecting a Cat 5, but I sure have been surprised before with something coming out of nothing, and titles like that interfere with my somewhat coma-like state
