Police: Woman kidnapped, assaulted
DALLAS, Texas (The Dallas Morning News) - A 35-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped Friday night in North Dallas and sexually assaulted over the weekend, police said.
The woman was walking to her car around 10 p.m. in the 13000 block of Preston Road when two men and a woman grabbed her from behind and threw her into the back of her 2005 Nissan, said Dallas police Lt. Andy Paris.
She was held face first into the back seat while a suspect drove to an apartment, where she was sexually assaulted at least once, Lt. Paris said. She told police she thought the apartment was in south Dallas.
Around 4 p.m. Sunday, two suspects drove the woman to an apartment on Roby Street, where she called police. She was taken to Parkland Hospital for treatment.
Police don’t have a description of the suspects, but believe they still have the woman’s dark blue and white four-door Nissan, Lt. Paris said.

5 children hurt in Allen accident
Incident involved vans from Plano church
By TIARA M. ELLIS / The Dallas Morning News
ALLEN, Texas - Five children suffered minor injuries Monday afternoon when the church vans they were riding in collided in Allen, police officials said.
The three vans, which belong to Fellowship Church in Plano, were heading north on U.S. Highway 75 just after 4 p.m. when the first van slowed to avoid debris in the roadway at Exchange Parkway, said Capt. Robert Flores, an Allen police spokesman .
The other drivers did not react quickly enough, and the vans rear-ended each other, causing a chain reaction wreck.
The five injured children were transported to Presbyterian Hospital of Allen with non-life threatening injuries.
The roadway was cleared and traffic freely flowing less than an hour after the crash, dispatch officials said.

West End Marketplace closing
Building will reinvent itself without retail
By STEVE BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
DALLAS, Texas - The biggest retail building in downtown's West End district is closing its doors after 20 years.
The West End Marketplace will shut down at the end of the month while owners of the historic structure come up with a redevelopment plan. Over the years, the building on Market Street has lost several major tenants, including Planet Hollywood and a movie theater.
Ecom Real Estate, which manages the building, recently gave tenants in the shopping center until July 1 to close.
"We are studying alternative uses for the building – each of which would be significantly more productive than retail," Ecom president Bill Nabors said Monday.
The West End Marketplace opened in 1986 as Dallas' first festival marketplace. The former Brown Cracker and Candy Co. building – constructed between 1902 and 1908 – was converted into a combination of shops, eateries and nightclubs with an interior atrium.
The 240,000-square-foot building was almost fully leased when it opened but has declined in popularity.
Planet Hollywood opened in 1994 but shut down in 2001. A 10-screen cinema on the top floors operated about seven years before closing in 1993.
Even with the resurgence downtown and construction of the nearby Victory project, the West End Marketplace has continued to lag.
"We've been struggling as a retail building for some time," said Mr. Nabors, who expects to have a new plan for the property in place by late summer.
Even so, some business leaders in the West End and remaining tenants in the shopping center are sorry to see it go.
Bill Dewbre has operated his Wild Bill's Western Wear in the marketplace for more than two decades.
"I started out at the West End," Mr. Dewbre said. "I think I'm going to stay in the downtown area."
Greg Schooley, executive director of the West End Association, said he's optimistic about the planned redo.
"They supposedly have some very good plans for that building," Mr. Schooley said. "Real estate brokers are saying this is one of the hottest areas in Dallas right now because of Victory opening."
And with the departure of high-profile restaurants including Dick's Last Resort, Tony Roma's and Lombardi's, "on the face, it could look bad right now," Mr. Schooley said. "But we are just having growing pains."

Motel guests say they didn't hear fire alarms
FARMERS BRANCH, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) — Some of the 70 people evacuated from a burning motel in Farmers Branch early Tuesday said they never heard fire alarms.
The fire at the Best Western in the 13000 block of Stemmons Freeway was reported about 12:45 a.m.
The part of the motel that caught fire was under renovation, and at least partially unoccupied.
The fire rapidly escalated to four alarms, and Farmers Branch called on units from Coppell, Carrollton, Plano, Dallas and Addison to help battle the blaze.
Despite the heavy smoke, motel guest Jerry Williams said he never heard any alarms.
"I heard someone run up and down the hallway: 'Get out! Get out!'" Williams said. "Some guy hollered and said, 'The fire alarm's not even working,' so I jumped in my pants, shirt and shoes, and out the door I went."
One person was treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters expected to remain at the scene for several hours to keep an eye on hot spots.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Inmate killed in prison gang fight
AUSTIN, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) — A fight between rival gangs at a northeast Texas prison left one inmate dead with 23 stab wounds and at least three others injured, officials said.
Officials said Monday's fight at the Telford Unit in New Boston was isolated and quickly controlled. It was the first killing this year in a Texas prison. Two were reported last year.
The assailants were armed with homemade knives, six of which were found in a hallway after the fight. The assailants were arrested and being questioned, officials said.
Correctional officers deployed three canisters of pepper gas and stopped the fight within minutes, officials said. Prison authorities identified the victim as Augustin Amador, 34.
According to officials, Amador and four other members of the Tri-City Bombers were attacked by six members of the Texas Chicano Brotherhood as they were being escorted back to their cellblock after lunch.
The 2,800-bed Telford Unit, which is located in Bowie County about 145 miles northeast of Dallas, was in lockdown, standard procedure after a fight, officials said.

Man disappears in Lewisville Lake
LEWISVILLE, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - Authorities were searching Tuesday for a 20-year-old man who disappeared in Lewisville Lake while swimming.
The man was boating with three friends around 8 p.m. Monday when he jumped into the water to cool off, said Tom Reedy, spokesman for the Denton County Sheriff’s Office.
"He jumped off in about 40 feet of water,” Mr. Reedy said. “He started struggling and they threw him a life jacket (but) he went under.”
The boaters, who were on the southern end of the lake east of the Interstate 35E bridge, called 911 after their friend failed to resurface.
Authorities are using dive teams and sonar equipment to find the man, Mr. Reedy said.

Man convicted in ax killing set to die
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) - A 34-year-old former crack cocaine user on probation for auto theft when he was arrested for capital murder heads to the Texas death chamber Tuesday night.
Timothy Titsworth is to die for the ax slaying of his girlfriend in Amarillo almost 14 years ago. He'd be the eleventh prisoner executed this year in Texas.
Titsworth was condemned for the death of 26-year-old Christine Marie Sossaman, whose body had been found at the mobile home she was sharing with Titsworth. The woman had been struck some 16 times with a dull ax.
Evidence showed Titsworth, who dropped out of school after the eighth grade and worked as a roofer, was high on crack cocaine at the time of the attack.
According to court records, a friend of Sossaman testified the victim told her the day before she was killed that she intended to ask Titsworth to leave. The friend said Sossaman told her she believed her boyfriend had been stealing from her.

Man, 83, who killed wife denied veteran's burial
By DAN RONAN / WFAA ABC 8
DALLAS, Texas - James Roberson, the 83-year-old Dallas man who in March shot and killed his ill wife, has been denied a burial in the D/FW national cemetery, his family says.
Roberson had tried unsuccessfully to commit suicide after the murder, and had three weeks later died of brain cancer.
Burial at a national cemetery is an honor that's available to nearly all veterans.
James Roberson was a World War Two veteran.
But one sentence in a federal law, could have prevented his and his wife's burial here.
The VA's burial criteria says officials can deny burial if there's clear and convincing evidence the person committed a state capital crime, but was not convicted because of death prior to trial.
By all accounts, Roberson was a fine member of his Oak Cliff community for 60 years.
The last several years of the Robersons' lives were not easy.
She was disabled by a series of strokes that left her entirely dependent on her husband.
And in January, James Roberson learned he had terminal brain cancer.
"He adored mother. They adored each other," said his daughter Sally.
Then on April 25th, a very frail James Roberson shot and killed his wife.
He turned the gun on himself and it misfired.
Weeks later, James Roberson died of cancer.
Over the weekend, there was a joint memorial service.
But just hours before the service, family members were told by the D/FW National Cemetery they could not have their cremated remains buried together there.
Seeing Roberson's frail health, the DA's office never took the charges to the Grand Jury.
Sources say a murder conviction would have been difficult and Roberson was released from jail on $250 bond.
For the last two days, the decision whether or not to allow the Robersons to be buried together has been debated by the VA at the highest levels, all the way up to Washington DC.
The Dallas VA office recommended James Roberson not be given the honor, but it was okay for his wife.
The family says that's unacceptable.
His daughter Sally says before he died James Roberson had a final question of a family priest.
"Dad said, 'can I be forgiven?' And Father Poole said, 'James, all you have to do is ask.' And he said, 'Oh, I have done that, I certainly asked.' And he said 'you are forgiven.'"
Roberson's family believes in the eyes of God, he died forgiven.
They're asking the Veterans Administration for the same compassion. A final decision is expected shortly.

Motel blaze investigated
By HOLLY YAN / The Dallas Morning News
FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - Farmers Branch fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a four-alarm blaze that severely damaged part of a Best Western motel early Tuesday morning.
The fire started about 12:45 a.m. at a lower breezeway in the motel's southern building at 13333 Stemmons Freeway, said Farmers Branch city spokesman Tom Bryson.
No one was inside the building, which was used primarily for storage.
A person who tried to investigate whether there was anyone inside the building suffered first-degree burns. About 70 people from the motel were evacuated.
Damages were an estimated $380,000, Mr. Bryson said.
WFAA ABC 8 contributed to this report.

Officer: Heat, traffic fuel road rage incidents
By MARY ANN RAZZUK / WFAA ABC 8
DENTON, Texas - A Denton man managed to escape with only bruises after he said he was attacked by an angry driver near the 100 block of South Loop 288.
According to Jerrod Donahew, an angry driver tried to rip out his windshield wipers, choke him and then slammed his car door several times on his legs.
"He slammed it again, and that's when it caught me on both legs," he said.
Donahew said the attack occurred after the driver wrongly believed his younger brother made a hand gesture at him three miles down the road.
"That really shocked me big time," Donahew said. "I've had some incidents back on the base, but nothing like that."
Police departments across North Texas are familiar with road rage cases. The cities of Denton, Colleyville and McKinney are all investigating recent cases of alleged road rage.
"As temperatures increase, tempers increase as well," said Randy Roland, McKinney Police Department.
Police said increased numbers of road rage incidents have escalated and have included hand gestures, fights, accidents and the display of weapons. More traffic and road construction have apparently fueled tempers.
"What used to be a 30 minute drive is now a 45 minute drive," Roland said. "If something goes wrong,it becomes an hour drive, and people get upset. And at times, they don't do the most rational thing and that's when road rage incidents occur."

Man executed over 1992 ax killing of girlfriend
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) - A former crack cocaine abuser has been executed tonight in Huntsville over the 1992 killing of his girlfriend.
Timothy Titsworth was condemned for the ax slaying of Christine Marie Sossaman of Amarillo.
Evidence showed Titsworth was high on crack cocaine at the time of the attack.
A friend of Sossaman testified the victim had told her she thought Titsworth was stealing from her - and she planned to ask him to leave.
Titsworth was the eleventh Texas death row inmate to have his execution carried out this year.

West End Marketplace loses tenants
By MACIE JEPSON / WFAA ABC 8
DALLAS, Texas - The homemade fudge at The West End Marketplace is still sweet, but very few people know it after 20 years.
The fudgery was here when downtown Dallas's largest retail building opened its doors.
"There were many places to eat and shop; everything was together in this one small place," said Cherie Burleson.
Just Dessert's has left now, and two of the eight nightclubs that once made up famed Dallas Ally.
Tom Persch still manages the building.
“Certainly. It's part of the family and it's going to be hard to lose them, but we'll try to keep them in the district. When we close, we'll keep a couple of the tenants on the first floor. The clubs will stay open,” said Persch.
A handful of tenants will be gone come July. Doug Anglin, who’s run the antique store for 15 years, is among those tenants.
Business hasn’t been good and he is already looking ahead.
“We're moving to Grapevine Mills. Right across from Hello Kitty, next to Starbucks,” said Anglin.
Wild Bills Western Wear is moving north after 20 years, but not far. They are relocating to the old Lombardi's restaurant location.
The next phase of this 100-year-old building that used to house a candy company is uncertain. No word on what's in store, only that retail will likely move outside, with something else moving inside.
The historic West End district is primed for new life with Victory Plaza shops, restaurants and downtown living space underway to the South. Not necessarily an end to the West End, just a pause.
