Cartoon Network to Rerun 'Pee-Wee's Playhouse'

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Wed Jun 07, 2006 11:43 am

Cartoon Network to Air All 45 Original Episodes of 'Pee-Wee's Playhouse' Beginning July 10

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (ABC News/AP)— After being shuttered for more than 15 years, the doors to "Pee-wee's Playhouse" are being reopened. The Emmy Award-winning show will get new life on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim lineup, which will air all 45 original episodes beginning July 10, company officials announced Monday.

"I'd say this is a dream come true," actor Paul Reubens said in a statement.

Reubens, 53, created the bow-tie wearing Pee-wee Herman in 1978 as a member of the L.A.-based comedy troupe, the Groundlings. Known for his big laugh and small suit, Pee-wee gained worldwide fame in 1985 as the star of his own movie, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," directed by Tim Burton.

The film's success led to "Pee-wee's Playhouse," which originally aired Saturday mornings on CBS beginning in 1986.

In 1991, a year after production wrapped on the final season of "Playhouse," Reubens was arrested in Florida for indecent exposure.

Reubens returned to the big screen with an acclaimed performance in 2001's "Blow."

He actually got caught, er, pleasuring himself at a XXX movie theater right here in Sarasota, FL. IMHO he never should have been arrested. He got a raw deal for sure.

Yes, once they spot a pervert, it is really hard to ever watch them on tv again. Yes, he is sick especially since his audience was mostly kids.

Yes he is. I always knew he was weird even before he got arrested.

I just hate it when perverts associate themselves with children, like Michael Jackson. PeeWee had a tv show with kids.

I loved Pee Wee's Playhouse. The humor didn't seem to be exactly aimed at kids, IMO. Have you ever seen the original version which "introduced" the characters? Every so often it runs on various satellite/cable channels.

Hmmm. I thought his show was funny.

I don't understand how what he was doing would be considered offensive in the place where he did it. One factor in an indecent exposure case is that the actor should know that others are likely to be offended. What's the big deal about one more person having sex (albeit with himself) in an adult emporium?

Many people would come unhinged if they really knew what went on behind closed doors among supposedly upstanding members of society.

Keep in mind that Pee Wee is an actor. It's not like he's supposed to be a role model or something. There's lots of hollywood "heros" who have had very seedy personal lives.

I do believe that in addition to the charge of pleasuring himself he was caught exposing himself in public. I found the show to be creepy when I was growing up, but maybe that was just me.

The show is kinda amusing, but being an enthusiast of classic and modern animation, I'm a tad miffed at Cartoon Network's recent habit of airing live-action shows and movies. The fact that Looney Tunes and classic Hanna-Barbera shows have all been dumped to Boomerang (a digital channel few people get) to make room for more 30-minute toy commercials is also annoying.

Cartoon Network is starting to become another cable network which doesn't hold true to it's name. Kinda like MTV, which has turned into everything-but-music television, and TLC, which stands for The Learning Channel but seems to consist almost entirely of redecorating shows (as if we don't have enough).

I think I'm just gonna cancel my cable subscription soon. Until now, the only saving grace was that Pee-Wee Herman wasn't on any of the channels, and now that's gone.

It was political, actually. The city of Sarasota, FL was involved in trying to clean up its image, so it started busting adult theaters. The city knew it could charge people there with all sorts of pervert crimes and the police department would look like they've actually done something worthwhile.

As for child pornography charges in 2002, the local prosecutor admitted that a child stuff tape accidentally became included in evidence against Reubens. The tape was actually part of another case. They did, however, seize a collection of vintage nudes, which is not considered pornography, whether it includes people under 18 or not. Just to avoid the chance of a bad jury result, he pled guilty to a misdemeanor.

Alicia of course not. But the act he committed in there is something that should have been done in private.

I would say that constitutes him as a pervert.
