mf_dolphin wrote:Sorry folks but this isn't up for a vote. We are discussing the limit but it's more of a technical issue than anything else. The way our board's software runs is that when you click on a topic to read it the board reads every post involved out of the database and then gives you the first 20 posts. With 20 posts per page a 50 page thread would cause over 1000 database reads. Now take a thread like recon/advisories etc which sometime have 50-60 doing that at once the load can get overwhelming. By minimizing the number of pages we cut down on the impact of this shortcoming. We are also looking into a board modification that would change the behavior of the board but until we know a little more we're going to keep the limit as it is. Thanks for your understanding.

Well that answers the question!
We all want the board to flow as quickly as possible.
I would think ideally that one would not want any limit at all but if it slows down the server, I have total faith in the S2K Mods to do what is best for all.

Here's a suggestion: Quit making posts within threads regarding how many pages it has and whether or not a new thread should be made or the page limit be increased. 25% of the posts within active threads are the aforementioned.

Don't get stuck on stupid -- adapt and overcome.

The 10 page rule should be discontinued. They fill up in mere minutes it seems like now and it is hard to follow all of the discussion. At least expand it to 20 pages.

Well the staff certainly knows more about how to keep the board running smoothly than we do so why dont we just follow their simple rules and enjoy ourselves? Every community must have rules in order to run smoothly and storm2k is no exception. Marshall explained why; its not that hard to understand.

I just can't imagine what it will be like if we have another hurricane like Katrina and still having that 10 page rule. Those 10 pages would probably fill in less than a half hour.

This may sound a bit harsh, but if someone doesn't care to read the last few posts of a 10 page thread, they will probably not miss much. If it's an important post, it will be quoted in the new start of the thread. So far, as least that's what I've seen. And when a major system comes along, I can pretty safely assume (yeah yeah, I know what assume means) that it will reinforce what I have seen even more.
You go Mods!! And thanks early on, for making this board available in the best ways possible.

MJ,Also the members can go to the other threads as they are posted at the first post of each new thread and that makes also an easy search. :)

Just a thought.....

If the point is that there is a limit at 10 pages, perhaps the page number could be limited by people not simply posting to post. Often times I peruse a thread and find a post that simply says..."I agree" or has a smiling emoticon.

I would think that the thread and ultimately the page count could be limited by posting thoughtful responses. If you agree with a poster then fire an IM to them letting them know how great you think they are. :)
