This Depression is Nothing...It's Un-Organized

#1 Postby Sean in New Orleans » Sat Jun 10, 2006 10:54 pm

It's a start, but, this little system is nothing. A Summer thunderstorm packs 3 times as much punch as this little depressoin. Nevertheless, it's a glob in the GOM..the season has started.

I'm on the Florida east coast and I don't even expect a thunderstorm tomorrow.

I think it will be a little more than just "A Summer Thunderstorm".

I agree. The typical summer T-storm does not have *sustained* winds of 30-40mph and gusts to 40-50mph. It also does not cover an area larger than a state!

We had a severe thunderstorm in Mandeville last week that had winds over 80 mph and caused extensive damage, along with many pine trees split into two...and no, it wasn't a tornado. It was straight line winds.

I think it'll be like Arlene last year-not a big deal, but an ugly reminder that the season is upon us. Hopefully areas that need rain will get it in the next couple of days.

Exactly...it's a reminder...can't wait to have this season behind us. I hope nobody gets it really hard this year.

well that is an exception. MOST summer storms do not have gusts to 80mph.

Yeah, it does have an eerie resemblance to Arlene, right down to the track she's taking; but Arlene came very close to hurricane strength before landfall, and I just can't see this thing getting up to 70 mph sustained at all... and I hope I'm right on that, for the sake of all concerned.

Meh, you know a depression is disorganized when different members of S2K have spotted 3-4 different centers.

Expecting 20 inches? Some cities in Cuba have already REPORTED five inches more than that -- 25 inches!

It's no Hurricane, but it's three things:

1) More than a "summer thunderstorm"
2) A potential flood damage situation for hundreds of thousands of people.
3) A grim reminder that the 2006 Hurricane season is here and is not wasting any time.

It is also bringing much needed rain to W. Florida and helping to fill our aquifers. Although signaling the beginning of our much dreaded hurricane season, it also means the end of our brush fire season. :D

I look at this as an opportunity to brush up on our tracking skills and terminology and to renew our S2K friendships. Nothing like a good TS to bring everyone back to the board.

Have a good one, everyone.
