What the Tampa Area Can Expect

My mom's going to Tampa for a job training seminar this week. Her flight is Monday morning, leaving DFW at about 6am. At what point would the airport begin to be severely affected?

Should my mother's flight be affected by Alberto-to-be?

We got a shower from an outer band around 6PM this evening.

They will increase tomorrow and Monday, should the storm track towards the West Coast of Florida as expected.

I would expect a cancellation or delays, but anything can happen.

Dr. Jonah Rainwater- My guess would be that your mom's flight should be fine. From what Ive been seeing on the local stations is that the heavy stuff isnt suppossed to move into the Tampa area until after noon. Hope she has a safe flight!

the new track is much further north of Tampa than at 5pm. My new prediction for the city is...

- 20 to 35mph sustained winds with gusts to 40-45mph (may be up to 50mph).
-A few lawn chairs may move, a few twigs/small branches may snap, a few potted plants may tip.
-2 to 6" of rain.
-1 to 3 foot higher than normal tides.

Overall a minor event.

Given the new path and decrease in intensity/organization - I concur with this forecast

I've also refined the title since I don't think at this time that Alberto will bring Frances-like conditions to Tampa again

I'm in South Tampa and it doesn't look bad. We hve waves crashing over the wall om Bayshore. I have to say I'm always in awe when I see this. I don't think it will be anything but a rain maker. I'm no sure if we will get alot of wind, if any small gust. Just what I think.

I hope you are preparing now after looking at the sat presentations this morning, I will reinstate my original forecast which will call for wind gusts to 60mph+

My wife has a flight out of KTPA on Tuesday 6am. Im thinking thats when we would most likely be in the heaviest winds. i never paid attention to the airport last eyar or 04 during the season. Does anyone know what affect this TS would possibly have at the TPA Airport?

I say there is a 80% chance there will be major delays starting tonight and into Tuesday

That's what I figured Should be our worst conditions come midnight tonight into tommorrow afternoon. Hope I get the day off so i can be there than.

There may be some 50 MPH gusts embedded in squall lines but the Tampa area is quite far from the projected landfall so I don't think we will be hammered by sustained high winds. Should blow through pretty quickly after it makes landfall.

I disagree, the onshore flow into the bay will flood parts of South Tampa (e.g. Bayshore) - it doesn't take much to flood South Tampa.

Sarasota won't see as much wind but the Tampa Bay area and points north could see some high gusts still.

Another thing to think about is that there could be tornado outbreaks also since Tampa Bay will be on the East side of the storm....

I'm still calling for gusts up to 60mph + in the squalls that pass through.

Well yes and no. Tampa will remember the BIG surprise that Frances pulled when it strengthened overnight suddenly and caused widespread power outages for weeks. Of course there shouldn't be much structural damage - mostly just to trees.

Might be a Frances like scenario for the folks living in Cedar key north to landfall. Storm surge in Tampa will probably be only a couple feet or so, the low areas may have a problem at high tide.

Boca, I agree. I just had a chance to look at everything this AM. I think the Tampa area should be prepared now for Cat. 1 conditions. I also think it will move in quicker than expected, with the worst weather later today and overnight. I just emailed relatives in Pinellas County and told them they should be ready.

Remember TS Josephine?? It caused some significant flooding here along the west coast and it was of similar strength and track. remember, the winds extend far out from the center. This is not a tightly wound hurricane. significant coastal flooding would not be a surprise. a 50 mph W or SW wind does a number on our coast.

Frances-like conditions are not that hard to pull off in a tropical system. Tampa saw some weak to moderate TS sustained winds and gusts into the 60s from Frances, really that is not that hard to achieve.

called my mom before i got on here and she said that she has between 35-45 mph winds
