Hey, on the wx channel, they just got done speaking to the Flight Meteorologist onboard, his plane touched down not to long ago...he said they measured winds at flight level of 74 knots and that the surface winds were 70 knots...it was Lt Col Rich Harter if I remember correctly...anyone know anything about that or did anyone else see it?

Interesting none the less in if that 70 knots where good for the surface then this is another Cindy. But on the other hand surface data doe's not support it...In you factor it differently I don't think it was weaker then 55 to 60 knots.

Look back at the first thread link and see the data that I and others posted this morning about the 74kts. :)

I know what you guys said about it...but this was the actual On-Flight Met and he said they recorded 70 knots at the surface...so it is still confusing...

The key number for hurricane strength: 78 knots. That would translate to 65 knots once converted.

Okay, I'm confused here. You mean they are suggesting the difference from flight level to surface level winds is only 4 KTS? Somehow or other this doesn't make logical sense to me--perhaps someone could explain what I'm not seeing.

that is what he said...74 at flight level and 70 knots on the surface...I honestly have no idea if it was disgarded as bad data or what?

Based on the looks of the system, I think this Recon will show a weakening.

Okay, thanks. I wasn't trying to point any fingers, just trying to make sense out of that statement. Have they gotten any dropsonde data on this thing? Or is that reserved for more serious threats? I haven't had time to read all the RECON data, perhaps I should check there.

Last night it was really bad and they still found the same wind intensity as in the morning.

there was dropsonde data by the NOAA aircraft and it did not come close to indicating hurricane intensity
