there was dropsonde data by the NOAA aircraft and it did not come close to indicating hurricane intensity


Thanks for the info. I kind of figured that might be the case; but wanted to make sure. I figured a dropsonde would be a more reliable source of what those surface winds actually were.

I think I might know why they are waiting so long to take off (which I guess is what is happening).
Since the storm is so much closer (about 300mi SE of Keesler), and they do about 50 miles per dataset (10min), that means the storm is only about an hour's flight away. Therefore, since they are scheduled to be in the storm at 8pm EDT, they should only be taking off shortly.

That sounds like logical scheduling.. No need to do laps around the thing and waste resources either.

Well, it would allow them to be in the storm longer, but yes, if they wanted to stay in the storm for same amount of time as they were in it, say, yesterday morning, then it would definately save some fuel.

WindRunner, since you do a lot of Recon data, could you tell me how to find out three things.... Their location, the wind speed (I guess dropsondes??), and the pressure, please.
