there was dropsonde data by the NOAA aircraft and it did not come close to indicating hurricane intensity
Thanks for the info. I kind of figured that might be the case; but wanted to make sure. I figured a dropsonde would be a more reliable source of what those surface winds actually were.

I think I might know why they are waiting so long to take off (which I guess is what is happening).
Since the storm is so much closer (about 300mi SE of Keesler), and they do about 50 miles per dataset (10min), that means the storm is only about an hour's flight away. Therefore, since they are scheduled to be in the storm at 8pm EDT, they should only be taking off shortly.
