Climatogically speaking, has a major hurricane ever effected the western gulf coast in the month of June?

Hurricane Audrey was one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States, and is the only recorded Category 4 storm ever to make landfall in June.

On the evening of June 26, 1957, people across southwest Louisiana went to sleep believing they had another day to prepare for the approaching Hurricane Audrey.

Unfortunately, Audrey both intensified and accelerated overnight.

Early the next morning, the hurricane's horrific effects were already upon the coast. Approximately 400 people died, most of them from water associated with a massive surge. Flooding consumed the flat, low coast of Louisiana as far as 25 miles inland.

Western Gulf (this only includes TX north of Corpus) June Hurricanes include:

-A Hurricane hit at Matagorda Bay in 1880.

-A Category 2 that hit Matagorda Bay in 1888.

-A Category 1 hit on Aransas pass in 1902 which then curved up into SE Texas as a TS.

- A Category 1 in Matagorda Bay in 1921.

-A small Category 1 in Port O' Conner in 1929.

-Category 4 Audrey on the TX/LA border in 1957.

-Category 1 Bonnie landfall near Sabine, TX. This storm produced coastal gusts up to 97mph and even inland gusts reached 75mph. This caused lots of widespread minor damages to trees, fences and signs.

As you can see, all it takes is a Category 1 to do damage (Bonnie), with hurricane force gusts up to 50 miles inland. A Category 2 is even worse and can produce hurricane force gusts up to 100 miles inland. A major hurricane is extremely rare during June in this area, but Audrey showed us that it is not impossible. These waves all need to be watched closely.

A CAT4 hurricane in June may have happened back in 2005. Emily and Dennis were close to June so a Cat3-4 could have happened. This year, nothing is going to be ruled out.

Its not impossible, but its highly unlikely. We'd have to have August-October 2005 conditions in June for that to happen.

Or July 2005 conditions. Remember that Emily was upgraded to a Cat. 5.

Considering how volatile the conditions were at those times, had ANY storm gone over the warmest waters like they did at any time, it would likely have been big, if not Category 5, even in the wake of one of those...
