I sent this page URL to the Weather Channel, asking that they could forward it to John Hope's family, because I know when the ones I miss dearly are missed by others, and John Hope's fans are legion, it means so much to me. It may be blown off, but maybe they will get to see this and have some good memories and know that Mr. Hope is still missed and still deeply respected by many that he touched, though never knew.

I remember as a kid during the summer constantly watching the clock to be sure I didn't miss the Tropical Update. I remember being so overjoyed when I'd see John Hope on the screen (and how disappointed when anyone else was doing the Update). When John Hope was on the screen, SOMETHING EXCITING was happening! Even though I went through Frederic as a small child, my "reawakening" to hurricanes came in 1985 with Danny, Elena, Juan and Kate...and John Hope was there through it all. I must say that as an adult, I get those familiar butterflies in my stomach when I see Steve Lyons...probably because, as John's successsor, I know SOMETHING EXCITING might be happening again

My husband asked me just last night who my favorite hurricane forecaster is and I answered without hesitation, "John Hope". He was surprised by the answer, anticipating one of the current forecasters that we had listened to during the day and evening, but none compare to Mr. Hope. We still miss you!

This is true, Nash is to New Orleans (old enough to remember) what John Hope was for those who first began to follow the Weather Channel... truly giants in their own ways.
I must add here, since this is John Hope's thread, that I've always admired his calm voice of reason even in the direst weather situations. I just can't see him being a part of the media circuses some of these have become--just too much class IMO. Not that he downplayed anything, because he certainly didn't. He did more to educate Americans about these storms and their danger than anyone I can mention--it's just that there was something almost paternal in hearing him give all the details. I miss him greatly and while many have come that are great mets in their own right, IMO none of them comes close to filling his shoes.

John Hope was the reason that I started following the tropics, starting in 1984. My family knew that "Tropical Update time" was sacred, and they only poked a little fun at my obsession with watching (and taping) the Weather Channel. Most times they were watching too, especially when "the man" was on.
Even though the Weather Channel may have become a bit too mainstream in recent years, I believe that John Hope's principles and spirit are still a big part of the tropical weather coverage there, especially with Steve Lyons and Jim Cantore.
This thread sure has brought back fond memories. I think I'll get out some of my old TWC tapes and watch them. Thanks, Luis!
