my daughter was born in the philippines while i was stationed at Clark AB. so she is considered by law to be a citizen by birth.

Hmmmm... I always thought you had to be born in the U.S. to be President, but I guess not.

Interesting. I didn't realize that. I misinterpreted the "Natural Born Citizen" clause, I guess.

Wait, though. WHen McCain was born there, the Panama Canal Zone was a territory of the US. I think the Constitutional provision still requires presidents to be born on US territory. Military bases do not count.

He was on a US military base... it may make a difference for those just living abroad.

This is beyond dispute, the same was true of Barry Goldwater who was born in Arizona when it was a territory. The only thing I was trying to point out is that it has never been given a constitutional ruling from the SC, which, with the current extreme animosity and polarization in the country, I think would become an issue if it ever came down to it today. I already expressed, I'd consider them qualified, and believe the SC would hold up that opinion--but it has yet to meet that specific test.

Upon doing more research, apparently McCain's eligibility to hold the office of President is debateable. If he were to win a primary this would probably become a hot issue. There are conflicting court decisions regarding whether or not the child of American citizens born in another country is a "natural born citizen" as required by the US Constitution.

Interesting issue.

Exactly my point. While I personally think the issue is moot as the SC will almost certainly find in his favor--the fact remains that it has never been tested in the courts... and I fear sooner or later will have to be.

There'd have to be a constitutional amendment in his case.

Absolutely... as he's in no-way "Natural Born"... and for all his efforts I think the needed amendment would fail. This is a good criterion, IMO, as it completely removes the remotest possibility of split allegiances.

So, would Jolies baby fall in the same catagory as Arnold? Or is there a difference because Jolies baby's parents are US citizens. I am referring to running for President only.
