Two Hurricanes in the GOM at the same time.

#1 Postby Stormcenter » Wed Jun 28, 2006 4:47 pm

Well since we have nothing going on at the moment I thought
I would throw this question out to the experts. Has there ever been a
time when there were two "hurricanes" in the GOM at the same time?

I believe Edith and Fern were in the GOM at the same time in 1971. Edith originated in the Caribbean but entered the GOM while Fern was still active.

Perhaps this would be a good question for the "Question Box".. I certainly don't recall any but I believe there were two only days apart... I think Bonnie of 2004 was heading for the Florida Panhandle, just as Charley was in the N. Caribbean, heading into the Gulf... someone with more accurate info, or a case of two at the same time, would be welcomed to add this info.

OK... I see Steve has shed some light  thanks.

It's close, but not quite. Edith entered the GOM on September 12, at which time Fern was over Texas.

It would be really difficult as the storms would shear each other apart.

But it's still possible 2 hurricanes would be in the GOM at the same time, just not as strong because of the shearing taking place.

Two tropical storms, sure. Two hurricanes, quite difficult. It's possible, just difficult. Spacial limitations also apply here and they would have to be on opposite sides of the GOM, and land interaction may hurt as well.

Edith entered the GOM as a tropical storm and didn't recover until southeast of TX, after Fern had dissipated.

Ah, close but no enchilada. That was the only situation that I could remember. There might be shearing or we could get binary rotation (Fujiwhara) with one absorbing the other. I think the best way to get two storms in the GOM would be to have two smallish sized storms with one approaching BRO or Mexico near Tampico and another just west of FL.

Two hurricanes in the GOM would be quite diffucult, a Fujiwara would happen as soon as both canes enter the GOM.

We were close in 2004 with Bonnie and Charley affecting florida 2 days apart. There were actually watches up at the same time for both storms within Florida. That had to be a first with watches up for Charley in Florida while Warnings were in effect for Bonnie in Fla. Seems like Tampa was having to issue Hurricane local statements for both storms simultaniously
