College, Freedom, Yippee!

#1 Postby Swimdude » Sat Jul 01, 2006 11:58 pm

Ok, a little too steriotypical college student going into that title. Anyway, I'll be headed off to BAYLOR next year. Yes, I'm thrilled beyond imagination.

Sooo I've created this thread for everyone to answer these 3 questions!

1. What college did you graduate from?
2. What year?
3. Do you have any advice for me as I begin this adventure of my own?

#3 is the most important. Thanks for your help!

University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana)
1981

Enjoy yourself BUT don't fall behind in your reading. College moves at such a faster pace than high school. What you learned in a year in hs, you'll learn in a semester.

1. What college did you graduate from? Auburn University

2. What year? 1996

3. Do you have any advice for me as I begin this adventure of my own?
There is a lot of peer pressure at college. Don't give in to it. Take your studies serious and make good grades. Live life to its fullest but don't do anything that you are going to regret in the future because even though it doesn't seem like it matters at the particular day and time later on it might. And finally last but not least have a good time at college!

1. What college did you graduate from?
Coastal Carolina University, with a degree in Dramatic Arts

2. What year?
2006, just about 2 months ago

3. Do you have any advice for me as I begin this adventure of my own?
Be yourself, and don't let anybody change that. You are your own unique person, and people need to like you for who you are, not what they want you to be. And most importantly, do your best (I'm guilty at slacking), and make sure you're happy there. And try new things (no, not drugs, sex and that stuff...you don't need that in college, I did without), but things that are cultural, fun, intiriguing. Make friends, and hang out with them. Travel some. But most importantly, as I already stated above, get done what needs to be done at school.

1. University of Wisconsin-- Green Bay
BS. Earth Science/Environmental Science
2. May 2005
3. I'm telling my brother the same thing.... Make Friends, enjoy life and keep up with your homework. Professors will not track you down for the assignments. Yes you have to read to keep up with your class syllabus. It is ok to have what you want to study picked out already... sometimes that's the best.... don't be closed minded! You be told to think out of the box on several occasions... College is a challenge, I'm giving you a fair warning. Join groups (ie Habitat for Humanity, Campus Crusades, Student Government) you will make numerous friends from those groups.

1. What college did you graduate from? - I have college credits from 2 colleges but still no degree. What I call my "college career" (started at age 30, stopped at 32 to have my first child, restarted in 1998, stopped for 2 years later b/c of surgery/cancer, restarted yet again but I wasn't healthy enough to continue).
2. What year? - see above!
3. Do you have any advice for me as I begin this adventure of my own? - Yes I do! College is so important in today's job market. In fact, a Master's Degree is necessary in certain fields as well (Education for one). All of above advice is excellent but I'll sum up my advice - just don't ever QUIT (like I did!). Even if circumstances prevent you from continuing full-time, part-time while working full-time is the next best option (I have a 26 year old niece doing this).

I wish you the very best in college Swimdude!
