This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Where can I find info on hurricane deaths per year?

#1 Postby aOl » Thu Jul 06, 2006 10:14 pm

I don't mean per hurricane, I need something that gives me the estimated fatalities caused by a hurricane in the course of a year. Really, I need something that shows how hurricane deaths have been cut back drastically since the invention of satellites. I need this information on floods and tornadoes too so hopefully they might all be on the same site. I've been Goolging it for awhile and can only find fatalities from 1 storm alone.

As a member of the site, you could check Wikipedia. You could start with the 1960 Atlantic hurricane season. They have the death toll by year in the right side of the page in the infobox. It's all sourced if you have any doubts.

On the overall, I believe that goes without saying. You have, besides the satellite, the advances in technology that have created sturdier buildings, and better means of transportation and evacuation as well. Of course there will always be the anomalies like Katrina which has killed more than any storm to hit the US in 3/4 of a century.
