At least six blasts have rocked commuter trains in India

#1 Postby Janice » Tue Jul 11, 2006 9:26 am

MUMBAI, India (CNN) -- At least six blasts have rocked commuter trains at rush hour in and around India's financial capital of Mumbai, with at least 15 deaths reported.

Dozens of people were injured in the blasts, which took place around 6:30 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Tuesday when the trains were packed with commuters making their way home.

A correspondent for CNN's sister network, CNN-IBN, reported seeing 15 bodies at the Matunga train station.

Video from one station showed people with blood on them being treated, other commuters carrying victims and some people lying motionless near train tracks.

At least one train was split in half by the explosion.

Mumbai's subway system was put on red alert following the blasts on trains in the city's western suburbs, and police in the capital New Delhi also heightened security.

Airports across India were also put on high alert, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called an emergency meeting of his ministers after the explosions.

The blasts affected trains at the Mira Road, Borivili, Jogeshwari, Khar and Matunda stations.

Fourteen people were killed in attacks on a temple and a rail station in Varansi on March 7.

On March 12, 1993 more than 250 people were killed in Mumbai when 13 bombs exploded in several locations in the city.

The city's commuter rail network is among the most crowded in the world.

I wouldn't worry too much about here. This may not be Al-Qaeda. India has had similar attacks over the last 15 years from ethnic groups within the country.

Hmm, this is certainly not good for the already tense relations between the muslims and the hindus in India. This could lead to another wave of violence.

-edit- just in: deathtoll has risen to 150, more than 400 injured

So sad. Yeh this had more to do with the Kashmir situation btw Pakistan and India, but it is related to muslim/hindu fighting...and does have the signatures of some muslim terrorist organizations related to this conflict :(.

Or the word "Even" in 7 and 11 could be superstitious.

Simultaneous attacks = Al Qaeda. If its not Al Qaeda, they used the Al Qaeda trademark. While it could be a different group, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there are Al Qaeda members involved.

I hate to add another event to my list of engagements in this ongoing war. India and America are natural allies, even though during the Cold War we were in opposing camps. I will take the democratic and secular state of India over the friendship of Musharaff any day of the week.

What is unfortunate is that these thugs are going to stir Hindu nationalists, causing conflict among the Indian Muslims and Hindu Indians. It happens all the time, and every time it happens I think how precarious democracy and secularism is in India.

Fundamentalist Islam is the greatest force of instability, the strongest advocate of mass murder, and the largest impediment to peace in the world. It would be sickening if the Fundamentalism of the Muslims eventually rose the fundamentalism of other faiths.
