Would that possibly be because you've never truly experienced hurricane force conditions? I'm just curious. A lot of people think they're getting Cat 1 or 2 winds when they're only 70mph. Another words...winds seem for worse when you're in them than what their true speed is.

This is what Orlando (at the airport) got from Charley:

Sustained winds: 79mph
Gusts: 105mph
**Before instrument failed**

Also, once this storm reached Orlando it began to produce micro-bursts and tornadoes within it's eyewall. These isolated spots likely saw gusts over 110-115mph.

I would call the conditions in most of Orlando that of a "strong" Cat. 1 Hurricane. It could always get worse though. If Frances or Jeanne would have hit further north as a Cat. 4, then Orlando could have seen sustained winds as high as 100mph and gusts over 135mph.

Here are a few websites on Charley in Orlando:

^^pictures from Disney which was sparred the direct brunt of the storm. Still though, gusts of 75-90mph likely occurred in this area.^^

not true look at donna hit orlando as a cat.3

Sorry, don't think so:

That may be true at ground level on that experimental .gif of an old old hurricane but whether or not ole' charley was a 3 or not is questionable. Max sustained winds I think were still 115 at 9 when it reached Orlando. Archive articles from various newspapers edify this. We've all got to remember at flight level max sustained winds are different than what is on the ground. Given the proximity of Orlando being so far inland I'd venture to say the winds were heavily influenced on the ground by land therefore causing a great varience in winds. I'm sure that straight line winds reached gusts to Cat 3 but I'd doubt max sustained ... no I'd bank on the fact a wide area saw this, there was just too many land influences.

BTW, here is one article of many quoting Orlando's wind velocity.
