UPDATED: 1:07 pm EDT July 12, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A small plane that had problems Wednesday afternoon landed safely on Interstate 540.

The plane, which landed in the westbound lanes of I-540, was moved off the road by 12:30 p.m.

No one was hurt when the plane, a Cessna that had flown out of Durham County, landed near Creedmoor Road.

A crew from RDU International was enroute to move the plane, officials said.

Federal Regulations require that at least one mile per so many miles of interstate be straight..for this reason.

Not to be a killjoy, but I couldn't help but pointing out that that is an urban legend. Next time you're travelling down the interstate pay attention and you'll notice that you can go quite far without hitting a one mile stretch of straight road. :)

I found this, which happened a few days before the Raleigh incident. Interesting. There was also a plane that crashed onto an interstate in Ohio the same week. I guess things come in threes.
