RANTS OF A PIZZA DELIVERY GUY

I have been delivering pizzas for the better part of my adult life; some of the things we have to put up with are insane..and we must take it all with a smile.

1. Please give us your complete address when you order. The order taker is frequently some teenager who may not know you are calling from an apartment building or it may be a new employee not yet familiar with the area. This saves us drivers valuable time and enables you to get your food much quicker.

2. Try to keep your phone line open. We may need to call you back to confirm your order, especially if you are a new customer. Due to security concerns we may not be able to deliver your order if you are a new customer and we are unable to contact you. We also have new drivers who have no problem finding your street but may have trouble locating your house. They may want to contact u via their wireless phone.

3. Please stay at the location u specified until your food arrives! You would be surprised how many times I go to the door only to get no answer or be told that the person that has the money "stepped out". I try to wait a few minutes but what usually happens is I end up bringing the food back to the store and then end up going back to the same address again later to find out the customer had to "go to the store".

4. If you see a delivery driver walking to a customers location and you say "is that my free pizza?"or some other cute remark forgive the driver if he doesnt burst out laughing. If I had a penny for every time Ive heard that in the past 20+ years I would be retired now.

5. Please have your money or check ready when we arrive. Many times I go the the door and hear "how much is it?" (We give the total over the phone when we conclude taking the order) Then we are forced to wait as the customer looks for their wallet or checkbook. And I love it when after you write the check(after keeping me waiting for 5 minutes) you balance your checkbook before paying me.

6. This is really no biggie but we appreciate you paying with the smallest bill possible. For safety reasons we do not carry a lot of money on us. Please help keep us safe so we can serve you better.

7. I love it when u open your door and your 100 pound dog mistakes me for his new doggy toy. I dont mind being sniffed, after all thats what dogs do, but I dont appreciate having a dog with dirty paws jumping on my nice clean khaki shorts and slobbering all over me. I love dogs..remember though I am handling food and I must maintain a clean appearance throughout my shift. If your dog is the type that likes to jump on people..please restrain him/her before you open the door. Also if you have a dog in your yard please either meet me at the gate or bring Fido in when I arrive. I do not like being growled at or bitten.

8. Tips: We depend on tips to make a living. Most drivers start at minimum wage. We get a mileage reimbursement at the end of every shift but we depend on tips heavily. Enough said on that subject :lol:

9. Drivers working for major chains are trained to address customer concerns and complaints. I understand your frustration when your order arrives late or it isnt prepared properly. Please dont curse us; we ALL make mistakes. If you get a properly trained driver (and the customer deserves nothing less) your concerns will be resolved quickly and fairly.

10. Give us a liittle extra time in bad weather..especially on weekends. These are our busiest times and we tend to get swamped with orders. If you live close to the pizza shop you may want to go pick your order up instead of having it delivered if you are in a hurry. I dont mind, as I want you to get your food! You will call us for delivery again :D

LOL George! Amazing how many people have no common sense. :roll: Although I was myself was not sure about #8. I thought that tips were included in the delivery price. I think some pizza places do tack on a few bucks if your pizza is being delivered. Guess it varies. I will make sure to pay attention to that in the future. :cheesy:

You make min. wage + tips + gas mileage reimbursement? That's much better than my daughter who makes $2.15/hour + tips working as a waitress, on her feet for a minimum of 4-5 hours a day.

Kathy that sucks. The only reason why we are paid what we make is because we use our cars..wear and tear.I have waited tables before long ago..made $1.65 an hour.

BTW my tip on a $20 tab...which is the norm on the rare times I eat out..is $5. I know what its like to be at the mercy of the customer.

Thats not right George that is over 20%. $20 tab should bring in $4, and if it was 15% about 3 bucks. I always tip 20% at a restaurant and a quick way to figure it is take the first number of the total and double it. Like a $53 bill would be a $10 tip(5+5=10). If the last number goes over 5 like $57 then you round up to $60, so it would be $12. You are trying to get one over on us aren't ya Geroge. :wink: j/j

Nope. I tip well when I eat out. The waitresses dont fight over who gets to wait on me because of my looks :lol:

Hardy har har. Not all of us are as rich as you. :wink: My best friend is a waitress and SHE is the one who told me the short cut. I think 20% is a good tip. :D Alot of buttwipes don't even give her 15%. Now if I get outstanding service I do go over the %20. :P

NOT rich lol. As i said I do not eat out often. Its a treat to me. Having worked for tips most of my life I try to treat people right.

I've never waited tables, but known people who did and I also feel sorry for them getting stiffed on tips. I've seen people leave less than 5%. I always leave AT LEAST 20%. I've been known to tip as high as 50%. Only once (when I had a horribly rude waitor) did I not leave a tip.

$2 an hour? Is that current? That doesn't sound right. Minimum wage here is $7.15.

$2.15 is the minimum wage for waitstaff because they earn tips

For waitors and waitresses in most US states, the minimum salary is very low. However, tips MUST be enough to bring it up to the standard minimum wage ($5.15 in most places). If the salary and tips still don't equal the standard minimum wage, then the employer must make up the difference. Sometimes they don't bother, but they'll be in tons of trouble if caught. Wait staff are among the most taken-advantage-of of all workers.

As a busser I definitely agree that leaving tips is a necessity. Luckily at my restaurant the majority of the customers leave 18-25% tips.
