The STUPIDER Crimes Thread

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Tue Jul 18, 2006 11:54 am

This thread picks up where the old "Stupid Crimes" thread left off. And the reason this is named "Stupider", is that some of today's criminals get lamer with their ways of committing crimes.

Thieves Steal 14-Foot Inflatable Sheep

ROCHESTER, Minn. (WCCO CBS 4/AP) - America's Mattress co-owner Jim Sather is left puzzled after a rustler stole Serta Mattresses' inflatable 14-foot sheep from their store here.

"I can't figure out what someone would do with a 14-foot sheep," Sather said. "It can't go in your basement and if it's in your back yard, your neighbor will notice. If it's target practice, it only lasts once."

All the thief or thieves left was a handwritten note at the scene of the crime that read: "For the sheep, bring peace to the earth."

Sather said their mascot is missed.

"He's the granddaddy of all sheep and there's a whole flock that will miss him," Sather said.

The sheep is labeled with a No. 1 and is worth an estimated $3,500.

Serta produces "plushie" toy sheep replicas and in its commercials, a flock of unemployed white sheep roam neighborhoods seeking a home without a Serta mattress.

According to the commercials, Serta Mattresses are so comfortable that the time-honored tradition of counting sheep to put oneself to sleep isn't needed.

Man fined $20K for carrying six eggs from endangered species in his underwear

SYDNEY, Australia (Court TV/AP) — A man caught with six eggs from endangered species in his underwear as he was preparing to fly to Bangkok was fined $20,000 by a judge who rejected his claim that he only wanted to surprise his girlfriend.

Wayne Frederick Floyd pleaded guilty in February to exporting regulated native specimens without a permit or exemption, an offense that carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Although Judge Martin Sides called it a commercial venture, he said he didn't mandate jail time because the eggs had come from a collection of birds at Floyd's home and hadn't been taken from the wild.

Floyd was about to board a flight from Sydney to Bangkok, Thailand, last November when a customs officer frisked him and noticed a suspicious bulge around his groin, the New South Wales District Court was told. A strip search revealed six eggs hidden inside a stocking in his underwear.

The judge rejected Floyd's claim that he was trying to take the eggs overseas "to surprise his girlfriend."

Two of the eggs never hatched. The others contained two gang gang cockatoos and two galahs, both listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, which includes species facing extinction unless trade in them is controlled. A galah or cockatoo egg can fetch tens of thousands of dollars when sold overseas.

Man arrested in Wis. cop's house while retrieving pants

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (PoliceOne.com/AP) - An 18-year-old man was charged with felony burglary and property damage after he returned to the site of an unauthorized party at a police officer's house when he forgot a pair of pants.

Eric D. Hening was caught at the home of Officer Timothy Patton when he returned the night after Patton's son threw a party that included underage alcohol consumption without his father's permission.

Authorities are investigating after a police-issued handgun, seven other firearms, ammunition, speed loaders, high-powered radios and several Sheboygan Police Department uniform shirts were taken during the party.

Hening has only been charged with theft of a shirt and misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and obstructing an officer.

A sheriff's department deputy found Hening wearing the inside-out police department shirt while he was hiding in the shower of an upstairs bathroom, a criminal complaint said.

Hening was also photographed wearing the shirt for his mug shot before officers realized he was wearing it, authorities said.

Hening told police he returned because he needed to retrieve a pair of pants, the complaint said. Hening said he leaned a ladder against the locked home and entered a second-story window.
