The NHC says to pronounce it BER-ril, which would sound like Cheryl. Their pronunciation guide says to pronounce Bertha as BUR-tha, so thus, in Beryl's case, it's pronounced as a short e, rather than a u.

REGARDING THE PRONUNCIATION OF BERYL...A REVIEW OF SEVERAL
DICTIONARIES SHOWS THAT BOTH BER'-IL AND BURL ARE ACCEPTED
PRONUNCIATIONS...AND IN FACT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DIRECTIVE
SPECIFIES THE FORMER...TWO SYLLABLE...PRONUNCIATION. THE ONLY BERYL
I PERSONALLY KNOW ALSO PRONOUNCES IT BER'-IL. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY
CONFUSION.

(I don't think I spelled it correctly above but I thing the NHC said it was correctly pronounced as Zorse or something like that!)
Really? I didn't remember a debate over that one. Georges is a fairly common name and is pronounced Zhorzh. The only thing I remember then was local mets mispronouncing it.

They did, otherwise it would have appeared in 2004, and the 2004 G storm was Gaston.
I've always pronounced it BER'-il and I'm not changing my mind. I even tried "burl" when they said that's how it is pronounced, but I couldn't get myself to say it that often at all.

Hey Andrew92, that is the way I have been pronouncing it as well, and I heard yesterday the OCMs on TWC pronouncing it Ber-il, as well.
