Fun question about Mexico
Okay, I'm going to Mexico August 5-12... Playa Del Carman.
Anyways, I was thinking, hypothetically, if I was to buy a carton of cigarettes in Mexico, how would I get it home without paying duty? We are leaving Toronto then landing in like Cancun. Then Cancun to Toronto.
Don't they have hand searching in Mexico, so they'd see it? What if I put all the cigarettes into a pringles container? Hmm... this might be a bad topic, but it's worth banking on.
This smells like illegal actions too.

FYI, here is the info regarding what you cna bring back duty-free. Note, you do have to be of legal age to smoke. I'm not sure what age that is in Canada.

Here's a cool idea for you. Buy several thousand cartons of cigarettes. Strap them on the back of a donkey and have a Mexican lady to bring them to the United States across the border. Go into the United States. Rent a car. Drive back to Canada with lady, cigarettes and self. Marry the Mexican lady, sell the cigarettes, and buy a house.

It'd work. Aren't Mexican cartons $10? I could make $50-$60 profit on each carton here.

Gotta agree with you there. Canadian Customs Officers are VERY strict as to who and what can enter their country.

Mexican has no baggage check while leaving Mexico? Suppose they did, I just put them into pringles containers... they would think it was chips right? Hypothetically...
Also, I know of someone who snuck back palm tree seeds to Canada by hiding them in pringles containers.

Mexico doesn't care what you take out of the country. They don't even really care what you bring in, from my experiences.
It's not smart to try to sneak anything by the Canadian customs guys on your way into Canada. If they decide that you're trying to smuggle stuff in, they will put you in prison. As an American, my experience is that Canadian customs is extremely strict and very efficient. I wouldn't try to slide anything by them. You can legally bring in one carton without paying duty. I would declare anything more. You may find that they let you slide by anyway, but at least you won't have to worry about being considered a smuggler.

I've been noticing a lot of warning about Canadian customs. I've been to the airport ones twice now, and they were friendly as can be. The Americans were always asking questions, requesting to see our passports and other ID. Same with the border crossings. Going into the USA you get stopped for 10 minutes, but coming into Canada you say your citizenship and go.

It may be different if you are Canadian enteriung Canada. My experience is just the opposite of yours, as I can enter teh US with a wave of my passport but I always get close scrutiny when I enter Canada.
IMHO, I think they should drop customs formalities for travel between the US and Canada. heck, if you cross at a rural crossing they often don't even have agents working there.
