I think Hermine was actually a depression when it made landfall... so was Charley (which had a TON of hype)

When was the last system that was a tropical storm that affected SNE?

Bertha was the last July storm. 1996. And Bertha was still a tropical storm when it blew through the region.

Absolutely. It is news since it doesn't occur that often.

I can see little kids being scared after what has happened in the Gulf during the past few years. They know it's a storm, it has a name and they know bad things can happen with them. I'd say let's give the kids a break.

Just checked, you were right

Only thing I remember about Hermine's remains clearly, was that it caused a lightning bolt that fired my previous digital satellite dish; took a couple weeks to replace it too :grrr:

Yeah it was like that here to. A couple days before we were to be affected, the news casters were saying stock up on food and the like, then nothing happened. Just a couple of showers along the coast.

I wasn't surprised to hear there was hype up there.
It's like down here, in the South,.. when every there's a snow on the way it gets soooo overhyped. Even if it's just an inch or two.

The difference is that down south, since snow is so uncommon, an inch or two of snow sticking to the roads can be equally as disasterous as two feet in New England.

A weak tropical storm up here is the equavalent of an afternoon severe weather episode which are common here. So really, the hype here is not needed (at least for weak TSs) but down south, hype for snow isnt all that bad.

Hermine was a 35KT tropical storm at landfall, according to the NHC report. It weakened to a depression after landfall

That's a good point. Just a little bit of snow and ice can be disastrous down here.

I guess people just get excited over unusual weather.
