HUGE STORM - Brief videos added

Just sent in a report to the NWS in Melbourne. A storm just hit Merritt Island packing wind gusts over 60mph! Branches, twigs, palm frawns, etc. are EVERYWHERE! I felt like I was in a hurricane again. I am unsure if trees and powerpoles are down, but I am sure they must be somewhere. This is one of the worst storms I can remember! Winds were likely sustained over 50mph for the duration of the wind storm (10+ minutes). I got some video that I may be able to upload later. I will have more updates soon as I fully assess the damages. Anyone else experience this?

BTW: Now hearing that a funnel cloud was spotted at Cape Canaveral! Could I have gone through a weak tornado?!

UPDATE: Just went outside and there are no trees down in my immediate area, but branches are all over and a tree is bending into the house's roof. There is also a palm tree on fire in my neighbors yard after being bent into a power line. Also, there are many dock boards in the Indian river meaning that the wind-generated wave action could have damaged a few docks.

9:30pm EST update>>>Upon further inspection I have come up with a wind estimate (based on video, personal experience, and damages). I have found that winds were likely in the 35-45mph (sustained) range during the storm with top gusts of 55-65mph. This is just as bad as any direct hit from a weak to moderate TS and resulted in damages to branches, palm frawns, large umbrellas (over 25 lbs. in weight), lawn furniture and docks. My experiences may have been quite localized though, because other nearby airports did not recieve high winds. The highest wind gust I found at an airport was 35mph about 5 miles to my east. I think what I may have experienced was a large downburst or microburst or a series of a few. This is the only way it could be explained.

BTW: I have a video clip I would like to upload, but I am having problems with all video uploading sites. Hopefully I will be able to get it on here by tomorrow.

**Just saw on news that a waterspout was filmed just two bridges up the river from me; which is only about a mile or two (if even)!**

There is no sound, and it is short, but you can somewhat make out the high winds. Also, there is a brief clip at the end showing the palm tree beginning to catch fire.

Yeah, after seeing that, your second estimate sounds about right, maybe a touch high on both numbers winds, but that's just from what you can see in the video, and I doubt you caught the worst part of the storm, so that's probably about right.

Good storms here in Houston, Ex!! I woke up to the sound of thunder at 1030 this morning! Nice and dark outside... Think we are going to see something outta that blob in the gulf?

Yes, you guys will probably be impacted by some heavy rains associated with that blob. You may even see some breezy winds too. I am actually somewhat mad I will miss it. :roll:

lol. Hopefully Houston will get some more active weather once I return.

I was just thinknig that, you must be mad that you are over there in FLorida.. Well right now, here in the Cy Fair area, we are trying to get a thunderstorm... Its moving up from the South, but I really dont think it is moving very fast or if at all... Its still thundering from the same spot it was when I woke up... and that was 30 minutes ago... So I thing the storms are moving slow... But we need the rain... When are you coming back?

I will be back on August 1st, so still another week here in FL. I do wish I was there if this thing becomes a TS. They are always fun to track when they approach your area, and Houston sure needs the rain after 1-2 dry weeks. The only reason I am not too mad that I am here is because of the storm I recieved yesterday (which I would not have seen if I was in TX). If I can get another storm like that one, then it will make up for any missed TS in Houston. :wink:

Just got a call from some people in Houston telling me that they had a HUGE storm in that area 2 days ago. They had dime to quarter size hail and 40-60mph winds (strong enough to knock down basketball hoops). I am missing a lot back in Houston! I wonder why I had not heard about this storm eslewhere on storm2k?

I've been pretty busy and didn't post - but I was on 1960 Saturday Night and a row of powerlines had been blown down all along 1960 in Atascocita along the southern border of Kingwood. They got a localized microburst of some pretty strong winds.

I got stuck in that storm Saturday too!! I was driving home, took me an hour to go 12 miles... The power was out from Fallbrook to 290 on 1960... There was alot of wind and lightning, not too much rain....

wow. I wonder why this was never reported to the SPC? This really makes me wonder just how much ISN'T reported to them.

Unfortunately, I think a lot. I've reported large hail a few times - even measured it before submitting a storm report - and I've never seen one get "published".
