Public Schools in VA do not start till after Labor Day. The school year here typically ends around June 15 give or take a few days.

When I went to a Catholic school we had classes on some Federal Holidays and if I remember correctly classes started the last week in August. Classes ended the last Friday before Memorial Day. Our winter break wasnt all that long either..maybe a week to a week and a half. At the time public schools were giving 2 weeks.

At Palm Beach Community College, fall term begins August 23 and ends December 18. Since I usually teach year-round (fall, summer, and spring terms), the "traditional" beginning of the school year isn't that major a deal to me.

In Palm Beach County Public School District (elementary-middle-high school) I think that teachers report August 9, so students probably begin August 14.

In prehistoric times when I was in school (mid-50s through late 60s) in the Chicago area, school never began before Labor Day and ran through mid-June. :P

10th and 1st grade homeschool starts at our house on August 8th.

Youngest one is looking forward to it; eldest is hesitant as this is AP Bio & English year, plus PSATs. She'd rather be surfing...

Absolutely ridiculous. I have never heard of a school starting in JULY. Thats just absurd. When did you get out, early-mid May? By the way, I start school on August 16. Got out May 31.

Ha . . . not entirely . . . good old Fauquier County starts back up on August 28, the Monday before Labor Day. We'll still get out around June 15, though, unless we don't get ANY snow days this year. It'd be nice to finally get out around the 7th for my senior year . . .

Back in the days when horses were the main mode of transport, Catholic School started the Wed after Labor day and ended the 2nd week of June, Public started the week after Labor Day week but ended the 3rd week in June for grade school, high school was a little different but ended the same...and the grade school day ended at 3:30 and it started at 8AM, and I survived 12 years of Parochial school. We used to tease the public school kids in the summer, they would still be going to school an we'd be in our swimming pools.

The earliest I'd heard of schools starting is the first week or two of August before HH914 said he started July 31. When I went to a private school we always started the day after Labor Day. After I transferred to a public school, I started around the middle of August. I like it better that way because the first term ends just before the Christmas holidays, and the second term starts in January. If you start in September, you probably have midterm exams (or final exams if you're on the semester system) a week or two after coming back from a three-week break.

My university starts classes on August 21st, but I won't start until the day after since I don't have a Monday class.

"It's the most wonderful time of the year!" 8-)

August 10th here, my daughter who lives in Prescott goes back on the 7th of August.

We NEVER went back to school UNTIL the Tuesday after Labor Day! OF course, we DIDN'T have "Fall break, spring break (3 days maybe) etc., etc." figure 10 days each for Fall Break, Spring Break and Christmas, no WONDER they have to start SO early!! School districts are crying the blues of budget short falls in Az. this year, WHY??? WELL DUH.........temps in Phoenix in EARLY August? 110-118°= AIR CONDITIONING bills from Hades :grr:
