If you had a hurricane out in the ocean like this what kind of storm surge and power are you looking ? How much worst than Katrina and Camille would it actually be ?

It is like cat 5's, it seems like they occur more and more. The good thing is they usually do not hit at full intensity. Islands seem to have been very lucky recently, the same for the Carolina coastline.

True and if they do it may be right before landfall but then you don't have a huge storm surge like you could if it had time to pile up.

So I bet this kind of Cat. 5 hurricane is so rare if it happens it will be so bad no one can even imagine what could happen.

The question is what should you be more scared of when this type of Cat. 5 hurricane hits ? The wind or the water?

Either way your in a very bad situation if you stayed because if you get away from the water then you have the powerful deadly Cat. 5 winds to deal with them. Either way your at a lost.

Isabel was a great example of our discussion.

I sorta remember Isabel.

If a island like Hawaii or any island have a very powerful Cat. 5 hurricane or typhoon hit them would the storm surge be as bad as this same storm not hitting a island but a large area of land ?

Of course this storm would of been a very powerful Cat. 5 hurricane or typhoon for at least a whole day or more.

So it would have a huge pileup of water and deadly Cat. 5 winds.

I would say not as severe due to the fact the energy can move around an island- it has other means to move. In the GOM all energy must disperse on the coastline. Some islands in the Pacific get big typhoons on almost a regular basis, Guam comes to mind.

So the wind is the main damage control for islands?

They are more prepared. Things like underground power and phone lines and better built coastal structures. This is the case for modern islands. The less modern islands are more at risk.

Interesting.

I guess they don't want to have to rebuild every year.

I wonder what Hurricane Wilma would of done to the islands if it hit at peak strength.

It was so scary looking when it was a peak strength. I can't imagine what would happen.

I wonder if the buildings could hold?
