If I remember correctly, isn't a 2C differential (I. 23 C/ 298 m
J. 25 C/ 301 m) pretty good for a TS?

That is a visual estimate of the ocean surface, not a measurement of wind speed--the NHC does not use this estimate to determine intensity unless it agrees with wind observations.

53 knots at flight level is, using .75, 39.75 knots, using .8 it is 42.4 knots...

But isn't 55 kt winds at flight level? Do all the calculations, and that lands us with a 50mph TS. Where are we seeing 63mph?

I took the vortex message and input it in the handy-dandy Recon excel decoder and that's what it said & I quoted: "Est. surface winds observed"....those would be estimated and observed....

Maybe someone could elaborate though, how does the onboard meteorologist estimate winds on the surface? Wouldn't their best bet be to go with what the data says rather than a person's observations?

thanks, I was basing that on somebody saying the T numbers had fallen to 2.0 from 2.5 earlier.

Perfect, noname, ty - that means 55kt x 1.15 (to convert to mph) = 63.25mph at sea level...no reduction for the flight level stuff

So, again  much stronger than they thought...

It's interesting how the BAMD drives Chris through Hispaniola while the BAMS keeps it north. It seems that the steering patterns are a bit different this time.

Think they'll have a special report for the upgrade or just wait until normal time?
