Recovering from a $16.8 Billion Hurricane doesnt happen overnight

Yet, neither Katrina 1.0 nor Wilma was a major Andrew-type storm. If this area can't adequately recover from Cat. 1s and 2s within the span of a year, whether for insurance related reasons or not, we've got problems and questions as to the long-term viability of this place as a major population center. South Florida may no longer be sustainable, at current levels. The tri-county area actually dodged the bullet with both of those storms last year, as they could easily have both been much worse. Especially Wilma, had it not meandered over the Yucatan.

Not flaming anyone, just trying to tell it like it is.

Wilma is still the third costliest storm in U.S history

Read the Recover and Preperartion forums. It takes years to recover for many people with different reasons. $$, materials, insurance, courts..etc.

Every June 1st I go out and buy all my supplies. What doesn't get used is given to the local charities for the meals at Thanksgiving. We have to evacuate and we have 2 local homes to go to. The only last minute prep, like everybody else here has said, is to put gas in the car and take money out of the ATM.
With Chris, even if it heads for western or northern gulf coast, I'll fill up my tank AHEAD of time. We know that price gouging will affect the whole gulf coast if a storm is headed anywhere near the oil platforms.

Life in the Keys is to ALWAYS be prepared. Simply need a fuel top off, close the shutters, and an extra box of poptarts. Seriously many down here do live in a state of continious preparedness and I am one of them.

I too have little more to do than head outside and put up the shutters, which usually isn't done until I know for sure it's coming.

Prepped. But this timing sucks. Will be out-of-town later in the week and due to return to FT L on Sunday. My brother is house-sitting, still if the storm heads our way, it might mess up travel on Sunday.

So I'll be watching the weather from up in Tallahassee. Taking my laptop and will of course be reading here too.

For god's sake, prep the family photo albums and the harddrives for an evac or waterproof and harden if they have to stay. It was heartbreaking to see people picking through ruined, totaly irreplaceable keepsakes last eyar after Katrina. You can get a replacement bank book or social security card...

I'm not in the cone but we just discussed our Hurricane plans incase Chris comes a knocking. We will check supply's and hit the store before the weekend. Because come Sunday if Chris is threatening out region it will be madness in the stores.

I gotta admit that I procrastinate it every year till the first hurricane not ts looks like it is going to hit. Well, I guess that it is time again to get the prep work done. But agree with olddude, we are mostly prepared year round. Still, I will be busy for a few days! ;)

I picked up all the necessary items we needed to top-off our hurricane supplies today....then later attended a meeting on the island regarding opening of our shelters, if need be.

Tomorrow will be a busy day distributing sandbags to those who need them here on the island....

Have a good evening. All be safe.

Tracy - Can't believe it is this far away and already covering the pumps?
Where was that in Ft. Myers? Thank goodness husband filled up both
cars a couple of days ago - otherwise we are "good to go"

Here we go....

#57 Postby FloridaDiver » Wed Aug 02, 2006 10:21 am

This is amazing, last week I finally replaced all the roof tiles that Wilma ripped off my roof last October, I look around my neighborhood and there are still many homes with damaged roofs. My generator is still in repair but I did complete the basic supply check last month. I can’t imaging what would happen if Chris decided to pull an “Andrew” and become another buzz-saw type storm and rip across a densely populated area. The real-estate market here in South Florida is going to take another hit if Chris comes for a visit…

Well let's see, you have contractor fraud. Legal reasons. Long waiting lists to get your roof repaired. Crooked insurance companies who only want to pay for half a roof when the whole roof is gone. May I suggest Patrick, that you take a ride along the MS Gulf Coast and see the devastation. The surge completely wiped out small towns and 80% of other towns. You will not and cannot recover overnight from all the devastation. Andrew may have been a 5, but Katrina was catastrophic with her surge.

Tracy:

I'll check down here in Naples on my lunch hour. Also, will ask my staff to notice when they go out. Of course, more gas will be delivered but at what price? My car is low and hubby's van need to be topped off. None of the gas canisters are filled yet and hubby leaves tomorrow morning for six days so I'll be on my own with the animals. This will be a first! I've asked him to try to locate a Flo N Go so I can handle the gas for the generator. We may have to have a dry run tonight to see if I can even start the generator by myself or move it outside and take things inland.

We have a our supplies and hurricanes kits completed at all times but there are always last minute things, like bagging ice, filling water containers, scrubbing bathtubs and filling them, etc. For the first time ever when we have been "threatened", I think I'll be riding this out at home because I can't move everything by myself to our safe home although pics, computer backups, etc will be moved out.
