I agree ivanhater. People tend to forget that the US is not the only land out there.

I'm REALLY glad the NHC issued / will issue this advisory. I was sure shaking my head at the 5 p.m. advisory - I knew they had gone too much on the low end of intensity.

They clearly did the right thing.. Visuals and the Data showed a stronger storms and they jumped on it versus holding off. The people in the islands are looking at going to bed soon and might have missed the chance to do some final prep for what they thought might have been a week TS versus a much stronger system.

I visited Saba Island in the Lesser Antilles 2 years ago. Some of the storms that affect the US are born down there. I was there right before hurricane Charley hit S. Fl. Those islanders and VERY conscious of hurrincanes. There homes have been standing some 100+ years and they have survived many of them. They are wooden but engineered with flow through venting for strength and integrity. They all have wooden strom shutters and they close them and hunker dowwn. They take it seriously because for them, there is nowhere to go. Saba is a volcanic island and believe it or not, their hurricane evacuation shelter has been carved into the side of the mountain. If bad enough, they go there. Probably the best place we could all wish for. Although I wouldn't call them alarmists, they are definitely prepared. I was amazed how well!

A Cat 1 in the Florida Straits is the LAST thing I wanted to see this weekend.

Well, that should set a lot of panic into motion by Friday.

I'm a little surprised they aren't forcasting more weakening for a storm passing this close to Hispaniola. We've seen much more powerful storms ripped to shreds there. I'm guessing either this storm will be a threat to the gulf (after reforming through the straits) or it'll end up dissipated (non-professional opinion, mind you). Of course flooding and mudslides are still a threat for Hispaniola, south Florida, and Cuba.

The last thing YOU wanted to see? I was going to take my son fishing on my one day off...before he starts school next week. Now...that's shot. He's 6...and he'll cry...and won't understand that daddy will be sleeping at work instead of taking him fishing.

During Katrina/Rita last year I worked 40 days straight. 14+ hours per day. I love hurricanes...but I hate hurricane season and what it does to my body.

I'm ready to retire. One more year....and this is my last season of this. :D

I told my wife tonight that I wish I had a tank that could hold about 100 gallons of gas...I'd fill it up now.

Sadly, many miss the insightful posts that AFM and others put out..

Look at the mass hysteria that is occurring right now over a TS over 5/6 days out from even entering the GOM....

For me...staying put is not an option. During storms....it's an order. When Rita was forecast to come over the base with 150 mph winds...I was under order (and on a select team) to b at the airfield hunkered down in a bomb shelter...

...which I wasn't happy about because at least wanted a window to look out of :wink:
