:grr: :grr:

We had it worked on a few years back and the guy said that of course it was the cheapest model the builder put in and we'd probably would need it replaced.

My computer is upstairs in the house and I know it's usually warmer upstairs, but the downstairs wasn't substantially cooler. I looked at the thermometer and it said 80 degrees.

Tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day of this heat wave. This sucks!!

WOW. That's horrible. Our A/C is struggling to keep up here but I can't imagine it going out entirely.

We've never had AC.... yup, we are stiffling in this heat. Lots of fans in the windows blowing the hot air out. Thermometer in the house read 94* this afternoon.

I'm in Boston for the week.... at the place I have here the windows were open and it was 92 inside. It was fine for me..... but then again I grew up in S. FL and spent a lot of time outside. We always had A/C growing up but put it on for the minimal amount of time possible.

I will admit once it got to the mid 90's in there earlier this afternoon I did flip on the A/C.... will need it tomorrow again as it is supposed to be 99-102 here with 110-115 heat index. Half of the people up here look as if they are suffering in this heat.... now I know what I look like in the winter.

See - there is someone w/o it! Just the way I grew up. I didn't have central A/C until I remarried, at age 31. My husband grew up with it, couldn't go w/o and I missed fresh air. There were many nights I had a sweater on, I was so cold! And then I got pregnant......it couldn't be cold enough later in my pregnancy. He'd come home from work and declare - it's cold enough to hang meat in here! I had it on 66 or 68 I know (now we keep it on 78). After a few years he asked me - are you used to A/C yet? So really, if you think about it I've gone without A/C over half my life now - I'm still in the getting used to it stage maybe....we celebrate our 20th in a week.

We have many windows in this house but rarely have we had all the windows open. It's either A/C or heat. Hardly ever in between. Do I miss fresh air - yes, sometimes I really do! Not right now though. It's like a sauna in Cincinnati right now.

Steph - please tell us today you either have it repaired, replaced or a repairman is on the way! You're facing 100 today aren't you?

No, you didn't jinx me Miss Mary!! LOL!

Marty ran out to Kmart last night and got a window unit for our bedroom. We've been trying to keep the animals in there but they won't stay. There's always the basement that they can go down to. Rudy, our dog, is where ever Marty is. We're mostly concerned about the animals.

I remember the days too Shannon without air conditioning when I was growing up. I know it can get hot in Wisconsin too. I think as Miss Mary said in her thread in USA Weather that we've come to rely on it alittle too much.

Anyway, the two places I called last night with "24 hour emergency service" couldn't send anyone until today - go figure???? The one place that will send someone out today may not be there right away since they have other calls - I'm thinking afternoon but they have to call us.

It couldn't have gone on an upper 80 degree day with humidity, it had to go when Philadelphia is forecasted to go to 103! *SIGH*

Oh Steph - I'd be so worried about my dog too! Very......she is usually with us too but doesn't sleep well in our room. That would be hard to keep her in there. She loves our powder room, w/o windows, when it storms or rains. No vent in there at all. It would be very trying keeping her cool and calm. We've tried sleeping with her, when company visits, so she doesn't bark from her usual spot - the laundry room - but she's up and down all night long. In the bed, out of the bed, scratching at the door, laying down suddenly with a very loud thump and sigh, as if to ask - why again am I in HERE? Worse than a toddler I say!

103? Oh my God........once you do get A/C again, it will take a long time to cool your house down. That won't be easy to do....it might take a day or two to get all the rooms comfortable. I know b/c usually smart hubby keeps the A/C set at a reasonable temp while on vacation (dog is at the A/C Kennel), but once he set it on 90 or turned it off. We couldn't sleep that night - it was like an oven in this house. He doesn't do that anymore......

Steph,

I feel for you, Wxbuddy! Glad that Marty could at least get a window unit for your bedroom!

There's an extensive heat warning for eastern and central NC, too, until 7 pm ET Thursday.

Even worse than having a broken AC unit is having one stolen. Saw a story on the 6 o clock news yesterday evening about an 87 yr-old woman from Raleigh who had been in the hospital for a while...when she returned home she found her unit had been stolen. A gentleman who saw the report bought her a new one and installed it free of charge.

Well thank God that there are some good folks in this world to help her out Eric.

You stay safe and cool as well! Marty said that the repair company called and they will be coming.

The air conditioning isn't working here at my office either....it was feeling stuffy in here yesterday but today there's nothing. I should've seen that as an omen!

The heat really doesn't bother me... after spending 4 months in the desert..... this heat is nothing.... I was in Qatar with high humidity.

I work at an indoor pool with inside/outside air exchange... Tuesday morning on the pool deck it was 90* air with 95* with humidity and I'm sitting in a lifeguard chair.

See, there goes pojo again to just prove my point! 25+ years ago I didn't rely upon A/C. I had it at work but our boss (ENT surgeon) kept the thermostat so low, we froze in the summer. So I was actually relieved to walk out to my hot car! No A/C at home or in my car. Open windows.....oh well, I'm not about to give up A/C just to prove to my family that we can live w/o - that'd be nuts, since we're all so used to it.

But we have raised the thermostat - to 78. I'm cutting back on using large appliances during peak times, turning out lights more often, etc.

Stephanie - so glad your A/C was fixed! I thought of you many times today. Picturing you going home to an oven! I'm guessing you'll get a great night sleep as will your pets. Thanks for the update.

At a copy center where I used to work elsewhere in a city where I lived in NC...the supervisor was a PA native and she loved the HEAT and in the summertime, too!! 95F + was her thing!! Myself, I am hot-natured and sweat like a proverbial hog and man it was grueling inside that bldg. the way she had that thermostat SET!

****

*I think...lady don't you know it's SUMMERtime and Mother Nature is PACKING enough HEAT as it is!*

I agree 100% Miss Mary. Shannon's body is conditioned now for the hotter temps. We are not because of the A/C so it is more of a shock. As I said, I grew up with no A/C and I survived. You just got used to it and went to the pool.

Eric - that lady was NOT normal!!
